Cades Cove

My wife and I have been there every year for over 20 years. We were there this past weekend and plan to go back in November. We get there early in the morning and wait for the park ranger to open the gate just after daylight. We stay in until about 1000 or so and then go out Rich Mountain road to Townsend. Then to some other places, get some boiled peanuts, etc. Then we go back late in the afternoon, maybe take some chciken or BBQ to eat and stay until dark. We love it. It is beautiful anytime of the year but especially in the fall. If you like the beauty of the outdoors and wildlife (deer and black bear) it a great place to. There are a lot of people there during the weekend so if possible it is best to go during the week. Cades Cove is the most visited National Park.

Roy,

I'm glad you made it. I believe that this past weekend was supposed to be "the" peak.

Although I live far away now in Montana. My love for mountains was born in the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains. Cades Cove is a wonderful national treasure.

Do inholders still farm and graze the bottom lands? Hope so. Never much cared for Cherokee or Gatlinburg but dearly loved what is in between.

Where is Cades Cove?
Has anyone ever been to Berkeley Springs,WV. I drove through there this spring & it looked like a really nice area...

Don't live very far from it.

Yes, this part of the upper Potomac valley is very scenic. You only hear about Harpers Ferry and Antitem Battlefield (a mile or so as the crow flies). There are many scenic areas and much history is to be found.

The last couple of times we've travelled back up to Ohio from Norfolk, we have came up Rt 17 to Rt 522 instead of the interstates. That is beautiful & we did come accross several battlefields... I get off the interstates whenever I can - it drives my wife nuts...lol

You're doing the right thing.

We did the same thing when we lived in Fredericksburg, VA and travelled back home to Western PA (Pittsburgh for me and Somerset for the wife).

Too many beautiful areas in this country to see. Just need to take the time to do it. Isn't it always the case - too much to do, too little time to do it. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

There was 1 person living in Cade's Cove and he had a lot of cow's. About 2 or 3 years ago he died and now there is nobody living there and the cows are gone. There are still plenty of deer, turkeys, and a few black bears. Last weekend when I was there we saw a mama bear and 3 cubs. This was the first time we have seen one with 3 cubs, all other times it was only 2 cubs.

My wife and I used to visit Gatlinburg TN every year or so. Cades Cove is near Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I really enjoy the history and scenic beauty of Cades Cove but my wife is more into the Crafts and Shopping in Gatlinburg.

We live near Berkley Springs too. Real nice place to visit. Other great places in the northern Shenandoah Valley are Luray and Front Royal.

If your travels ever take you up or down Interstate 81 in Virginia I highly recommend you get off the interstate and take US Route 11 instead. Every 10 to 20 miles along the route you'll find great small towns to visit and explore.
