Rat, they used those small ones just for one reason: cost. And didn't have sense enough to realize that more people would be added to the system and that it would cost more in the long run to upgrade later. And there are NO fire hydrants within 10 miles of here. We have an area volunteer fire department, 3 small towns within 15 miles have volunteer fire departments, and the paid city fire department 20 miles from here. They all work together, as needed, and just have to refill the trucks at flush valves on the water system, the 2" line in the local fire station, or with floating pumps from the lake.

Interesting Bird, we to have a volunteer fire dept. with several full time fireman. I don't believe where I am that there is yet a fire hydrant but I think thats just around the corner in more ways then one. We use the lakes here for the trucks here as well as for the very infrequent use of helicopters, mostly though we get planes dropping retardant, Rat...

In the almost 7 years I've been here, we've just had one fire that got into the woods where no fire trucks could go, and I was surprised at how quickly two forest service helicopters showed up to dip water from the lake and dump on it.

Rat,

Yes the clay is still a problem at 2' and limestone becomes another problem. All I have dug into is fairly soft tho. 2' deep may be a challenge at times, will see.

PatrickQ,

When is the schooled soil tester going to become a reality?
