I thought tractor companys didn't recommend chains on front tires?

Why wouldn't they recommend chains? Especially, if it is a 4wd.

I thought the chains could mess up the front axel on the tractors. I am not positive and hope someone else jumps in to either verify of deny but I think I was told by a dealer a couple years ago.

When my wife and I first got married, we moved to Los Alamos, NM. We bought a old '72 Bronco to get around in winter and, well, just to have fun! One of the big things to do around there prior to Christmas was to buy a permit from the Govt and go out to the National Forest land to cut down a Christmas tree. The area was in the mountains and very remote. You were not allowed to go into the area without a 4wd vehicle or a vehicle without chains. Our Bronco did not have M/S tires and needed chains. It was recommended to me that we put the chains on the front axle to gain traction and control. Worked very well.

Not to argue that what you heard is right or wrong, but the dealer could have been misinformed. Gee, have any of us had that problem!

The cost difference between the front and rear chains is significant. Nothing wrong with being frugal and equiping the tractor to get good traction for a reasonable cost.
