PLEASE BEAR WITH ME.: just had a new computer built. all top of the line components. computer works fine but had to get a new printer and scanner, bought a EPSON STYLUS 890 PRINTER(works fine) and a EPSON PERFECTION 1660 SCANNER(USB 2.0) ALL ports on computer are usb 2.0. if i boot computer with the scanner on, some things don't load in my system tray, sound icon is one of them, then i cannot access sounds from control panel click it and nothing happens, sound is very degraded also, also when this happens i can not shut down as u normally would. click shutdown and it just sits there.i also get a message that windows does not recongize device and scannere is plugged into a non usb 2.0 port. if i boot with scanner off all things load properly, and then if i turn on scanner i still get the above messages but scanner works fine.although i have no way of knowing if it is working at usb 2.0 speed, is pretty quick tho, am comparing it to my old scusi scanner. have uninstalled and reinstalled it , and still the same! am running WIN XP HOME EDITION. COULD THERE BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE SCANNER? sorry for such a long post , but know it is important to give as much info as possible.

Try going to the Epson web-site, and look for an updated/correct driver to download. A new driver may solve your problem.

First thing you should do is reread the manual that came with your EPSON PERFECTION 1660 SCANNER. Turn the scanner off and uninstall your software using the uninstall program that came with your software. Reboot and then reinstall your scanner exactly as it says in the manual. It may tell you not to plug the scanner in until after the software is installed. Sometimes doing one thing out of order will cause problems. Good luck. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Windows XP is your problem. I personally have not liked that operating system. I do have it at home but still prefer Windows 2000 Pro over XP.

I have a different scanner but my troubles are the same as what you are experiencing. My scanner is a Astra but the sound thing was the same. After many hours of frustration I finally called Astra, waited the long time on the phone and got instructions on how to uninstall all of the drivers. Unforntunately un-install does not remove all files. After I did that I had to re-install the software using safe-mode. I can't remember but I also had to stop some services before starting up in safe mode. Anyway after that I had no troubles.

I also highly recomend you follow Dave's advice and look for the current drivers on the web or call the manufacturer of your scanner.

Below is the message I got from Simpletech on how to re-install a USB Memory card reader - Loading new Driver for XP.

Before you install the new driver make sure you uninstall the old driver. To do that, Click on Start ,then All Programs, Look for the USB Card reader and choose the REMOVE option.

Sometimes the Uninstall/Remove program in on the Install CD or the Start Menu - Last option is to go to the Hardware Devices and remove from there - Regedit is playing with fire.

Also you could use MS-Config.exe to do selective stop/start of certain programs.

i did just as the manuel says, loaded the software and then hooked up the scanner.

Sorry, I haven't personnally looked for any of Epson's drivers, I own an HP. I have just purchased a new PC as well as rebuilt an older PC this month, so for the past two weekends I have been downloading drivers and updates for all of the software: probably 100 megs for each machine. It amazing, but there's an update for almost every piece of software loaded on your computer by the time you get it home and turn it on. Generally, if I have a problem, one of the first things I do is to look is to see if a software update that will fix your problem. It is not always the answer, but sometimes it is. I personally have a problem with a dll called ginamsi; the only thing I've been able to find referencing it is in Polish...I think. Since my internet search has turned up goose eggs, now I'm going back and looking at those downloads & updates to locate where this dll came from. It has disabled the multi-user view XP login screen and I'm stuck with something that looks like NT login.

It could be anyone of many things causing your problem. Even techs at technical support services cannot fix many problems on the phone. It's a little easier for someone to have a hands on look at a problem on a computer. Is it possible that the builder of your system might come by to have a look at it? Even if you had to box it up and take the computer and scanner to his shop it might be worth it. We can suggest you try things on this web site but we are all guessing. You can go to Epsons web site and ask their technical support by e-mail what they might suggest you try next. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

CRAIG: i have emailed support,they have not gotten back to me yet. might just call them. also the builder of computer is going to come and take a look at it, probably tues. or wed. thanks for all the ideas, will let u know when and if i find something out.
