Calling in on drunks on the road

About a year ago, there was a story about a man in one of the mid eastern states (Va., N. C., S.C., etc., I don't remember which one) that was being tried for homicide because he picked up, from the lockup, a friend who had been arrested for DWI and drove him back to his car. The friend drove off and killed another driver. He died also. I never heard the outcome of the trial. If anyone remembers the case, I would like to know what happened.

I Czech republic (the country I am originally from) even the establishment that got you drunk might be charged. If convicted it will lose the license. When my daughter got married they served only one beer/person until all the cars were moved away not from the parking lot but from the village. The owner of the place called bunch of young local guys to follow you home or to the hotel etc and brought you back. When all cars were gone unlimited amount of alcohol was served. When you wanted to leave the owner would wake one of those local guys up to take you where you wanted to go. Obviously you paid them hard cash.

I know the Feds have used the threat of withholding highway funds for many years, specifically I remember some things from the early '70s, but have they every actually withheld highway funds from any state that failed to go along with their recommendations? I'm not talking about just BAC levels, but way back there the threat existed relating to things such as periodic vehicle safety inspections, trailer brakes, etc. I know that 35-40 years ago some of the states did not comply, but their highway funds were not withheld either.

And . . . are we getting into politics that are forbidden on TBN or not?

I don't think it is politics if we are just discussing the history of the law..... Course that COULD be a slippery slope. :D

I remember when the BAC was moving from .10 to .08 the Feds got on the bandwagon and started to threaten to withhold the highway funds. I do remember one state holding out. What I can't remember is if the the funds were withheld. I want to say they were for a year. The fight may also have been over the 55mph speed limit. :D

Sad thing is that I am not THAT old but I sure cannot remember....

Dan,
Picky, picky, picky.

Norm

ps how do you get the smilies into you post? I can't figure how to do that.

NAP

NAPNorm,

There are three ways that I know of too post on TBN. One is the Post Quick Reply button at the end of the thread. Another is to hit the quote button after someones post. The third way is to hit the Post button on the left side of the page at the end of the discussion.

The last two ways to post show a group of smilies next to the where you type in your post. I think these last two ways to post get you quickly to the advanced editor.

If you hit the Post Reply button there is a Go Advanced button that allows you to add smilies.

In the Advanced editor you can add the smilies but also links to websites, align text, bullet text, format text, etc.

So know when you call me "Picky, picky, picky." you can add, :p:p:p:p:p

:D

Louisiana was the last state to comply with the feds lower .08 BAC and I heard that we lost 2 years of highway funding because of it. Our roads definitely look like we lost 2 years of highway funding.

Liquor lobbyists have always been very strong in this state and influence our laws heavily. We still have the most to-go drive-thru liquor and daiquiri shops but they put a plastic top on your styrofoam cup so that it will be "sealed" and not violate the law as an open container.

Dan,
You are right about the 55 mph requirement. I remember it because I got stopped on the first day. I was wondering why everyone else was going so slow and staying in the right lane on I-12. Lucky I had a "silver tongue ".http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

PS
I tried going advanced but the only thing that moved to the reply was the url
