Re: Can 425 handle 60\" mower

I can provide the definitive answer.

The answer is...Maybe.

A 425 will handle a 60" mower just fine up to a limit. The limit is defined by a combination of how steep your slopes are, how thick the grass is, how slow you are willing to go, and how nice the cut needs to be.

My property is pretty steep (on the edges of the Southwestern Virginia Appalachians), and the grass grows pretty thick and wet. I end up mowing the steepest parts of it at a snail's pace to get a fairly smooth cut and avoid stalling the engine.

The 48" mower apparently takes less horsepower to drive, and would allow me to mow faster. OTOH, the 60" allows me to mow closer to trees, shrubs, and fences without rubbing the PT's tires or body parts as often.

Even after a year and a half of ownership, I'm still not sure which mower would be best for me.

I'd have to say that I'm right at the limits of usefulness for the 60". The steepness of the slopes and the horsepower limits of the machine seems to me to be the biggest issue. If my yard was flat, I'd have no problem. If I mowed more than once a week or so, or if the grass grew at a rate of half an inch per week, instead of per day, no problem. If my PT had that Generac 38hp engine instead of 25hp, no problem /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hope this helps.

Re: Can 425 handle 60\" mower

How about this opinion? Don't even buy a finish mower. Save that money and buy a normal lawn mower. I think it belittles the PT for it to have to mow. It takes a lot of hours to mow and I would like to save those for other things. Like Brush hogging, Side mower, moving dirt, digging ditches, haling and busting wood and so on and so on. Even if I wanted a finish mower I would build my own out of a good used deck. ------ Just another thought and point of view.
By the way I do have the 48" mower and when the grass is high and tough I need to go slow. I don't think the 60 would be any faster but as said it would let you mow closer to things.

2001 PT425 with 60" mower.
Here's a before picture:
Before mowing.
And here's an after picture:
After mowing.
There are also some videos of the 60" finish mower on my web page, although they are grainy.

As you can see, my lawn is thin bladed fescue and not very thick except in the spring after the rains. It is also table-top flat with no slopes. I think is does very well for my conditions. I will agree with what others have said; you have to slow down in really thick stuff, like when I come home after two weeks of vacation and the lawn is 6-8 inches high. But normally, if I cut off no more than 2 inches at a poke, it works at a comfortable speed.

Re: Can 425 handle 60\" mower

I have the 60" mower and 5 acres of Almost no slopes, it will mow good in all areas until it gets really hot outside > 95 f. Then it requires me to slow down a little if the grass is really tall or really thick. if it is sparse grass or reasonably short or not very hot outside it will mow my 5 acres in about 3.5 or 4 hours and do a great job.
