I've been looking at the 790 and the dealer claims it is "big" enough to handle a 5 ft. Rotary cutter but I'm skeptical.

I guess the better question is can a 790 handle a Rotary Cutter on hilly terrain (in reverse)? Or do I need something with a bigger frame?

Thanks

Mine does with no problem. You will need front weights when you transport the cutter. Better yet, a FEL...

Backing up those hills in Reverse Low is going to be one slow operation (a little under ONE MPH). However, Reverse High Range will probably be faster then you want to go (is for me, anyway...). Assuming you've got a loader or front weights, I'd try going forward in 2nd Gear Low Range....possibly going to 3rd Low if it seems OK.

Now, I'm not seeing your slopes so I cannot even begin to judge what the circumstances are...but I would trying operating in a forward gear.

However, just don't try shifting gears on that slope. If you start freewheeling, you might not get the tractor stopped until you're at the bottom of the slope!

Thanks Roy! Fortunately, everything slopes away from the house!
; )

Do you have filled tires?

The answer is yes. I had 790 and had purchased a Woods Brushbull 60 for it. It worked fine. The unit came with a slip-clutch, and I would recommened the same for you

My 790 pulls a 5' cutter no problem, worked on my brother in laws place for the first time this season, the brush was hood high, never bogged down.

Best of luck /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, even John Deere lists a 5 ft. cutter as compatible with the 790. As Roy mentioned, you'll want some weight up front, either weights or FEL. If it's rough, the FEL bounces around quite a bit. I picked up some weights recently and much prefer cutting without the FEL.

OTOH, if the brush is quite high the FEL will help knock it down keeping it out of your face /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I run an MX-5 rotary cutter with my 790. It's a heavier duty cutter than the LX-5, but the 790 can handle it. Just be sure you have plenty of front weights or a loader. Otherwise, it gets real exciting when you go over a hump or turn too quickly.

Thanks for the confirmation everyone!

Now I just need to get my dealer to take the price down $1500 so it is comparable to the orange guys.

Thanks again.
