It is a cherry tree. We call them black or wild cherry here. My property is full of them.

Awful big for choke cherry, and those leaves don't look mature yet. Choke cherry leaves will also have hairs on the underside.

Looks like every large black cherry I've ever seen.

The thing is, in 23 years of living here I have NEVER seen any fruit on it !!! Whatever this tree is, it is the only one of it's kind in a huge area....combined with my neighbors we have 27 acres plus there are 100 acres of open farmland next to me and there are NO other cherry trees anyplace. I am quite sure this tree would need another nearby to pollinate it and produce fruit.

My Peterson Field Guidebook doesn't specify as to whether the leaves are supposed to be mature or not. It also specifies that choke cherry leaves are hairless....

+1 on cherry -- I have a number of them on my place that were damaged in an ice storm -- I hate it when I have to cut them down or they fall over:eek:

I am pretty sure now it is a cherry, but what species...??? Going back to look at the leaves on it today while mowing to see if anything has changed.

Most likely black cherry (Prunus serotina). Most of the others do not grow that tall for the northern areas.
