Congratulations! You are the owner of a lonely Black Cherry tree. Makes wonderful veneer. It has been an informative thread. The crazy thing is how much of this knowledge our grandparents knew off the top of their head and how many things have been forgotten.

Glad you found the thread informative...without the hairy leaf undersides and with the lack of any fruit, this was hard to figure out. There are about 65 common species of trees in Michigan and I can ID some of them easily and admire those who are more accomplished than I am. My dad had much more knowledge than I did at identification.

If you never figured out for 100% sure what it is.....

Cut it down, buck it up, and split it. Then it will look like firewood:thumbsup:

If you can though, cut a limb or something off and split it oped with a hatchet or axe. If it is cherry, it will be pinkins-red color and have a nice sweet cherry smell. EXCELLENT for smoking steaks and burgers on the grill:thumbsup:

I have never cut down a mature tree for any reason except they were dead or damaged and I currently have about 14 full cords of seasoned wood, so there is little reason to cut this tree down. I am quite certain someone planted this tree at one time as it is perfectly in line with the row of black walnuts seen in the background of the pic I posted at the beginning of the thread. I joke that if I ever need emergency cash I can sell this row of trees.

Not sure if you have livestock, but wilted cherry leaves can be toxic to them. Kinda like taxus and other plants with similiar acids in them that get worse when concentrated in wilty leaves.

Hmmm....we don't have livestock of any type but that is interesting to know...thanks. We have a lot of black walnut trees, including a huge one in front of the house, and I intentionally put our garden plot a long distance away from the tree. And although I mulch up leaves other than black walnut leaves to add to the garden plot during the fall, I never add any black walnut leaves as they are toxic to tomato plants.

JD if you taste one of the twigs and it tastes like bitter almonds, then its black cherry.

If it is wild cherry it is poison to farm animals...I know a hog farmer that lost 200 hogs when they ate from a downed wild cherry tree, at least that is what he told me so you might want to keep that in mind and verify it if you have animals and it is indeed wild cherry.

I don't think Bill has any animals, other than his cats.
