Can gas storage tank be converted to diesel

The 300 gallon tank was sold to someone else. It was an overhead tank, and after giving it more thought, I think I would rather go with an on ground type with pump. I have learned that many of the delivery compaines will not deliver unless the tank meets certain specs, like vented, etc.

One of my tractors holds about 80 gallons, it is an International 1086. I estimate we will use every bit of the 300 gallons this summer. Price of hay is going up. I already have a 30 gallon tank that I haul and pick up fuel with. I am actually looking at a 500 gallon tank now. Getting more concerned about diesel fuel prices. Try to buy when the cost is on down swing if that ever happens. Off road diesel around here is about $4.30 a gallon right now.

Couldn't the legs be cut off an overhead tank so you could set it on the ground?

Yea, it could. But the tank only had a fill hole at the top. Second hole on the bottom, which would not work. I am thinking that the problem with a bigger tank is much like you tractor in the winter, best to keep it full to reduce moisture condensation build up.

Keep it full to reduce condensation; but if you don't use it up fast enough it can get stale.
Almost a no win situation.

If there is a bunch of sediment in the bottom of it I'd clean it out. If it's clean and just about empty fill it with diesel.

If there's some gas left in it don't worry. Some manufacturers actually tell you to mix some gas with you diesel in the winter time if #1 diesel isn't available.

Gas in diesel is NOT GOOD. I would love to see a reference posted to just one reputable manufacturer who recommends adding gasoline to diesel fuel!!!!

Kerosene is the additive of choice for making #2 diesel into "winter diesel" and is, in my experience, mixed with as much as 1/2 kerosene, i.e. 50-50.

Leaving a few gal of gas in a tank to be filled with diesel is NOT GOOD PRACTICE.

Lets not put all the effort off on POWERLINEFIXER... Please anyone... name a source, give a reference, quote an available document... provide evidence that any reputable diesel manufacturer recommends gasoline to be added to diesel fuel.

I got lucky.
Found this 99$ 12 v pump on sale at northern tool for $69.
Not much more than a hand crank pump cost.

It is a great deal.
I use the pump to fill my tractors and to un load 30 and 55 gallon drums of fuel off my pick up.

In your situation you could set up a 55 gallon drum with the pump and set two other empty drums beside that drum.
Now get a couple more 55 gallon drums to haul fuel in and when you get back home with the 2 filled drums pump the fuel out of them into the 2 empty drums setting bside the one connected to the pump.
With an arrangement like that you should be able to get home deliver of non taxed fuel which would eliminate taking drums to get them filled.
55 gallon drums are cheep compared to buying a large tank.
There are two places selling 55 gal drums here at $10 and $15.
I have a 15, 30 & 55 drum.
I paid 12 bucks for the 30 gallon one.
The other 2 were given to me.

Fuel cost less per galon and you don't spend gas money going to get it if you have home dselivery.

I'd go one further. Actually recommendation is for #1 diesel instead of K1 kerosene. A lot of pumps in the northern climates already are premixed for winter with up to 50/50 #1 and #2. K1 is not #1 diesel despite popular opinion. Check with a fuel supplier. K1 is a very, very dry fuel that is not good for pumps and injectors. With a lubricity additive, it will work in a pinch, but not the ideal way to go for winterized fuel.

I will agree.... gasoline is NOT to be added to diesel for any use, winter or not. NO supplier or manufacturer ever recommends this. In actuality, all engine manufacturers tell you not to ever do it. It is not beyond the possibility that you will sustain engine damage.

A lot of these "home brews" are from earlier times. Diesel engines have advanced so much in the last 2 decades that these cocktail fuels will cause substantial damage. You'll get a person here of there that claims they do it with no problems, but do you want to take the risk with your equipment? One of my diesels would cost $12K just to do a rebuild.

I have driven semis in Alaska for 6 years straight, and have been operating diesel semis, construction equipment, and ag equipment for better part of my life. I wouldn't chance an expensive repair to some home brew fuel cocktail. There are so many excellent fuel addtives on the market that will lower cloud and pour points in diesel that in all but the most extreme cases you need not do mix anything else in the fuel. I have run straight #2 with a good fuel addtive at -30F temps with no problem. That is extreme and I should have mixed in some #1 to avoid clogging a filter.

I go thru better than 26,000 gallons of diesel a year. It fuels my business, so I can't afford to play Russian Roulette with my engines.
