Glad you found the problem and it's easy to fix.
The oil level would very likely cause a leak at the rear main if it was so overfull that the crankshaft was actually immersed in oil and the seal was, then, below the liquid level. They aren't made for immersion sealing, just splash sealing. That would be pretty full and it might cause other problems like blowing oil out the blowby tube or running on it's own oil.
