I have a 1500D and I am currently living in northern Mississippi. The 1500D did not have a thermostat when I bought it but N MS temps most of the time are warm enough (at least when I need the tractor). I will be relocating to southern Wisconsin is a few months and would like to make this tractor useable in colder weather which means adding a thermostat. Is this doable by just ordering the parts and then putting them on? I assume I'll also need to added some form of heater either radiator or block. Any suggestions?

thanks,

Larry

Are you sure it does not already have a "thermostart"? Of course you can always order the parts and install them.

Yes, I'm sure it doesn't have the thermostat. Does anyone have experience adding one? Is there any "got you's"?

Grizzly,
Just to be clear... you mean "thermostart" not "thermostat", right?

This is my first winter with a used YM155D and I'm waiting to see how badly I need a block heater. So far, the thermostart alone is getting the job done along with PS fuel treatment. This morning it was 9 degrees F and the tractor started after igniting a bit of fuel with the thermostart. I keep it in an unheated garage.

Thermostart was available as an aftermarket kit.

There's a picture of the kit in this old post

and in that same thread scroll down to the bottom for a photo of the modern version that uses a different reservoir and refills itself from the injector overflow line. (I would prefer the modern reservoir if I were starting from scratch.)

Here's how its wired:

And here's a photo of the first-series option kit. (with 25 years of dirt stuck to it.)

I think Perkins is the patent owner and there are only two versions of Thermostart, screw-terminal and push-on terminal. The Perkins Thermostart in this box cost only $15 from a ThermoKing parts house, and was identical to the used one shown.

Edit: add: I've been advised that after the YM2000 era, later Yanmars used a similar Thermostart with different thread diameter. Check before buying!

I have a 1500D and I live in a very cold part of Utah. Using the thermostart I have had no problem starting the tractor as low as 12 below zero.

Thanks everyone. THis looks like what I'll need to do. Its great to hear how low of temperatures these tractors will start.
