Can I connect a XLR plug mike to 1/4" Amp jack?

The other difference between the two is that the XLR uses a balanced input (two conductors referenced to each other plus an overall shield) while the typical 1/4'' uses an unbalanced input (one conductor referenced to ground). Best bet is a little mixer to make it work.
Mike

Thanks Mike.

It may come to a little mixer yet.

I only see one 1/4 input for the guitar, one 1/4 CD input, one gain control and one volume control. I suppose the guitar volume can be adjusted on the guitar and then roughly set the mic volume using the volume control on the amp. But would be limited in ability to set the bass and treble controls for the mic and the guitar at the same time.

Yes, we'll try that.

There are plenty of little mixers for cheap that would allow the connections and give more flexibility in setting the volume and tone, especially if the mic doesn't require phantom power.

I'm listening.

The next thing would be a mic stand with a boom unless the person doing the singing is different than the person playing the guitar.

Yep, got that at the same time.

might I suggest something like a Behringer XENYX502 or 802? that will let you plug the microphone and a guitar or whatever in and adjust the sound levels

Aaron Z

Yes, the 502 is only $US45, probably more here.

that will work, however it will probably be very quiet (if you are hooking into the CD in, it will probably work hooking into the guitar in), not a lot of volume coming off of a microphone

Aaron Z

Thanks Brad and Aaron for your thoughts on this one.

You'd be looking for a small mixer that would have a 1/4 input for the guitar and an xlr connector for the microphone. The mixer would have independent volume and EQ (tone) controls for the mic and guitar with a master control for the overall volume leaving the mixer. You'd connect the mixer via 1/4 output to the 1/4 input on the amp.

Before you buy a mixer, download the manual for it first and look at the hookups to be sure it will work for you. I would think you could find something suitable for less than $50 US to practice with.

You COULD do this with a DI box ( matching xformer ).. since you are trying to connect low Z ( 150-300 ohms ) to super hiZ jack ( 10k+ ohms )

Running a vox mic into a guitar amp is going to be a dicey bet for quality... plus it will only work if it is a dynamic mic.. if it's a phantom powered mic.. you need to backup.

do yourself a favor and get a small powered head and another mic... mic the guitar cab and run that line and the vox mic intot he powered head.. and feew them to a set of 10's on sticks. Poof... instant single act pa system.

( I do this as a living... hence the handle... )

Recently bought (on Ebay) a microphone for my son, with the intention to plug it into th "CD In" jack of his Amplifier.

I made the buy in a bit of a hurry not noticing that it came with a 3 pin XLR plug.

In an effort to get it connected I removed the XLR plug from the cable and then soldered just the red and black leads of the cable to the two connections on a 1/4" plug I had lying around.

Nothing happened. Can anybody offer me any advice on how I can make this work or will it never work?

I like the small mackie mixer, but maybe too pricey for what you want.
