In relation to the overall price of a 3540 the increase to go from a 514? To a 723 is nominal and almost a no brainer. VERY happy I upgraded.

Yup I agree.... make sure to go ahead and get the LA724 loader and im gonna suggest the HD loader bucket as well! Im really happy I went with the HD bucket now that Ive got it, very well built!

Agree completely, well worth the money on both counts.

I am about eady to take delivery of a 2008 L3400 and my first job is making a drive (about 1500 ft long). Good info to know about the bucket capacity and the counter balance weight. I have the tires filled and will have a box scrapper on, so I hope that is enough to prevent that tipping feeling.

My L3400 has loaded rears and frequently a 6' box blade on the rear or the BH, it performs great that way. I move lots of processed stone (0-3/4) with it. It will handle a full bucket that way with no issues. I usually shift into low range when working the pile of stone, then switch the M to transport it down the drive.

I'm in the same position as far as looking for a tractor to do very similar FEL work. I"m looking in the L3800 to L3540 size/power range. Sounds like everyone is happy with the FEL on the 3940. So... would you be just a happy with the smaller loader (514 I believe) that is an option for the 3540 or would that limit what you could do?

I would go with the 724 loader. I have the 514 on my 3240 and tried to trade to dealer to upgrade to 724 and out of four they all said they don't want my loader. Most said they don't put that small loader on a tractor that size. The 514 has a 66" bucket which does not cover your tracks (72" with r4). The 72" bucket offered is light duty. When asked about trading 66" bucket on 72" light duty bucket they again said they don't want it. By the way loader and bucket were almost brand new when inquired about this. Save the headache and get the 724 IMHO.

I have moved heaping buckets of dirt, rip rap, and snow with my L3940/LA724/HD bucket, and have never had a problem lifting or transporting. I have always had some sort of counter weight on the back, box blade, pulverizer, or ballast box. I think you would run out of bucket capacity (ft^3) before you ran out of lift power. God bless the old Fords, but the newer CUT's have way more capability than tractors and FEL's of 50 years ago. Do you know what year and model of Ford tractor your friend has? Philip.

If you are already thinking 3940, look at the L4240. It has a stronger loader, LA854. I have moved stone and dirt etc with mine and no issues. You must have a good ballast. I use either my backhoe or sometimes my rotarty cutter.

If the loader is properly desinged and matched, you should have no problem lifting a full bucket of any loose material. Wet sand is about the heaviest unless you lift a huge solid rock, that can sometimes be a little heavier. Now without starting a brand war (I have a kubota and love it), I would look at the kioti dk40se. Same size as the L39 series but the loader capacity is 2761lbs. Way more than the kubota. Hard to beat if lift capacity is a serious concern.

I think the answer to the the OP's question is yes. These loaders, no matter what number is on the side, seem to be able to lift anything you can fit in the bucket they come with and then some. I've had the loader bucket on my small tractor heaped with stone and rock and it doesn't have any trouble picking it up and moving it. Could I load dump trucks with it? - no, but I don't need to. A better question is how much do you want to move at a time. Bigger loader comes with a bigger bucket and more material moved with each load.

Smaller tractors and loaders are more maneuverable for residential work close to buildings and in woods, gardens and soft ground so being able to pick up bigger loads can be a trade off.

that is exactly what I did. Was headed for a 3940 then went with the 4240 to get the bigger loader--which, incidentally, is the biggest loader they make for the L series. So even if you bought the 5740 you'd still get the 854. Get the SSQA and HD options, too. Oh, and a cutting bar.
