Can I leave my Kubota 3901 in 4WD?

My M6040 is in 4WD about 8% of the time. Plowing snow or crossing the "moat". Easier on the drive train.

It sound like to me that it depends on the lay of ones land and what one is doing with the tractor......and maybe even whether it is a HST or a gear drive tractor.

As for me, I use 4 WD only when needed....and am real happy to have it then.

Cheers,
Mike

Mike, down here in the hills, mine is in 4WD I would estimate 95%

We have 20 acres we just bought along with a new tractor. I have 5 square feet of flat ground and the rest in some form of hill. Some shallow, some I won't be mowing any time soon, if ever, with a tractor. I have a whopping total of 7 hours on the tach but am wondering if this is hard on the tractor. I do have maybe 3-4 acres that is flatish that would probably be fine in 2WD but have seen some videos of folks mowing a hill in 2WD vs 4WD and the 2WD started skidding down the hill with a rear tire slipping (not sure what was going on with the other 3 tires as the camera was only looking down on 1 rear tire). All I'm doing is pulling a 5' brush hog currently. Thoughts? Sorry for the newby question.

Better leave in 4wd if you want to not skid down a hill in only 2wd and possibly turn sideways and flip. No 4wd; no 4 wheel brakes.

Some tractors like the LS P7010 that I just sold would automatically shift to 4 WD when you applied the brakes. I kept it in 2 WD most of the time unless I needed the extra traction.
I dont have any hills so steep that my B26 will slide down them. I put it in 4 WD when I need the traction. Sometimes I forget to take it out of 4WD and I get reminded when I turn sharply on hard ground. For many years when I first got it, I ran it full time in 4WD and the front tires show a lot of wear and will need replacing soon.

My land is hilly and I definitely use 4WD when I'm out and about. One time I'm careful to put it in 2WD is if I'm going to be taking my MX5400 and R4 tires across the lawn. If I'm doing to be doing any turning around in the lawn I put it in 2WD to cut down on the tearing of the lawn.

I'm thinkin' that I only have a couple of what some of you call "hills".
I run in 2WD almost exclusively.
About the only time I use 4WD is working the driveway or mowing the swamp.
Only a couple places my 2WD 2N ford won't mow up hill and those I just mow down hill.
The 1510 will mow everything. Brush hog or finish mower.

I usually leave it in either 2wd or 4wd, wherever I had it last. if it is in 2wd and notice that the rear tires are slipping, I throw it into 4wd. If I am in 4wd and I notice I am having trouble turning tight or am tearing up the turf with the front wheels, I throw it into 2wd.

On my L2501 it's noticeably louder in 4wd in high gear, which is what I'm often driving in going back and forth across the ranch, so i leave it off. I don't think about it in Low or Medium.
