When you look at the various configurations;
for 120-125 volt,
for 240-250 volt,
and especially for 125/250 volt in 3 or 4 pole configurations.

A 5500 watt gen set is going to struggle with any of the transformer based sticks running anything over 90-to-100 amps. Probably perfect for the 140 amp class if mig/flux welders. Again will struggle with the the 200 to 215 amp mig/flux machines running at their upper levels.

A power factor correction capaciitor would be a benefit but is more complicated that what it is worth for the layperson . Best to use a large enough generator instead of trying to make do .
