Can I use mild hot-rolled 1\" bar for bucket forks?

Or I wonder if the metal used by Payne's or whatever for forks is a cold rolled or a higher carbon steel? Thinking 1" x 5" and a hybrid upper and lower lip attachment design to allow easy lateral adjustment without loosening anything.

Thanks for your thoughts.

No idea what Paynes are made of...but I looked at a set that was 2 x 4 x 1/4" box material....sliced at an angle on the end and a plate welded over the end...so you didnt drive dirt..etc..down the "tube". Whatever material 2 x 4 box member is made of??

I made mine of 1 1/2" x 4" C-Channel from the local scrap yard. Of course my bucket is only rated for 1050# lift cap. to full height at pivot points and 2172# breakaway cap. The C-Channel will handle more weight than the loader will lift.

I believe that Payne's uses 3" x 4.10 bar channel which is mild CRS.

Have you seen my free plans on how to build these? Over 300 other TBN'ers have. If search is back working you can do a search here for bucket forks and you might find the post where my design is described. Or you can just PM me with your real email address and get a free set for yourself.

Better yet, I found it right here:
