Hate to tell you but JD manufactured the Scotts for the Home Depot. Do you think it's really a "cheapie"? Gerard

Yes, well, I suppose you're right. I was a bit rude wasn't I? Sorry Brent.

What I was trying to say, in my own indirect way, was that we tend to have enough cans of worms opened accidently 'round here that I find opening them on purpose to be counter productive -- though sometimes amusing. Opinions are thirsted for on TBN, but we need something to back them up, or members can get sucked into futile disagreements that could last well beyond the thread in question and provide no useful knowledge gain for anyone.

So, sorry for the reception and welcome to TBN (Which is what I should have said in the first place)

Cliff

Yes Gerard,
I know Scotts is an Orange painted Sabre tractor. But guess what, John Deeere seems to treat them like a red-headed, freckled, slow stepchild; parts I get almost in the blink of an eye are another matter for the Sabre or Scotts. Dealer says they come from Georgia /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I think.

I believe that the Sabre line was discontinued. It's possible that they're just not priority for them now, so one must wait. Gerard

Not to mention, all the slurrs from him about the over-priced JD -

I get that all the time. I still have a 1978 JD 5HP Tecumseh that runs almost as good as new.

The best thing about buying a cheap piece-of-crap mower is that next year, you get to have another new mower... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow. Hope you have a roll of chicken wire up to hold back all of the rotten vegetables that might get thrown...

Seriously, welcome aboard, but remember that there are allot of different brand owners here, and most would say theirs is one of the best. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

( Let's open one. My opinion> JD Lawn tractors; until you get into the 200 and 300 series their no better than murrays, mtd, etc. Kubota is the best utility. When Ford was making tractors, their midsize was the best buy for the buck and the used ones still are. Nothing beats a JD in the high hp. tractors, and their combines are untouchable. Am I close?

Brent in Ohio )

I see no point is starting a color war - they break out by accident often enough as is.....

I know diddly about lawn mowers, I think Grasshopper is the coolest but I can't afford....

Kubota has the best rep on compact tractors, not utility....

The old grey & just barely blue Fords were some of the best bang for the buck tractors in their day. Only the more modern JD 4020 can touch them for reputation & long term value.

Truley large hp JD tractors are frowned upon by those that know. Nearly any other brand of big 4wd tractor beats them in one way or another - either more power, more durable, or easier to get off-the-shelf parts to fix ecconomically. If you meant mid-sized 2wd/ FWA ag tractors, JD has a good rep - but _not_ the large machines. The large JD had some _real_ issues, none good.

In the 60's Gleaner was toe to toe with JD on combines, one offered good value & easy to work on, the other slightly more rugged for more $$$in purchase & parts & labor. In the 70's the 4400 & 6600 & 7700 were top dog around the midwest. In 2000, the only game in town is the Case rotories. I see 4 new of those on farms around me for any one new machine of all others combined. It is amazing how much Case has taken over the combine market up here.

I happen to own 4 different colors of tractors, and yet a different brand of combine. I might be not too terribly biased.

So, I disagree with you mostly. Tho I agree with you if you were thinking in the timeframes I mentioned....

Not that I care much. Color wars are stupid.

As much as I like JD, I have heard that from more than one farmer... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Maybe JD will wake up and figure it out.

So who is the king of high hp tractors?

You got me. The potato farmers up here used to rave about IH and Steiger. I have no idea if that's still the case. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
