Sky, this post is not aimed at you, you were just the last in line.

Over at BioDiesel Link there are many people who run bioD.

You want simple directions? Directions

Want to chat with people who are convenced we no longer need oil go to BioDiesel Now

Something that I have always found apparent. We currently import 3,000,000,000 barrels of oil (165,000,000,000 gal) a year. How are we going to replace that much oil. And that just gets us self sufficiant. That number will double to replace our fosil fuel locally produced. There is not enough land in the US to do it.

Less than 5% of the total plant mass is derived from squeezing the useable lipids out of plant material for the triglycerides to be chemically transesterified into fatty acid methyl esters. That is just one of the multitude of reasons that palnt derived biodiesel is non-profitable, besides being ecologically detrimental and totally incapable of replacing petrochemical fuel sources. BTW, Brazil and China are surpassing the US in soybean production so soon we'll have to source and import them from Asia and South America..... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

( will vegetable oil burn in a little yanmar okay? How best to filter used vegetable oil before trying this? How much veg oil to diesel should one mix? will straight veg oil work? )

I'm sure you'll be subject to all of the perils that any diesel would be running straight veggie oil. You need to research the SVO/WVO websites and get information from people who have miles upon miles of experience on single engines. There are a few out there. In a nutshell, and I'm no expert, I wouldn't recommend the straight stuff without some good filtration and heating before use (see conversion kits).

You'll also hear naysayers on biodiesel, as we are experiencing here. Obviously, his plaguing of the VW TDI site doesn't satisfy him, so he needs to bring it here too. I personally have run homemade biodiesel for thousands upon thousands of miles and haven't had a fuel problem yet. Not to say it couldn't happen, but to me, money talks, BS walks. I'll base my conclusions on my own tests and my own results.

Look into making your own biodiesel. It can be an easy setup and you'll save a few bucks off of the red stuff. It's also a lot of fun to take somebody's waste (WVO) and make use of it like that.

Good luck. PM if you want detailed info.

When I eat fried Thia food I could kill the dog, so does that mean the tractor would be bio hazzard then. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Seriously thought, I remember a bus than burned this oil and the fumes smelled pretty nice compared to a regualr diesel.

Does this do anything to warranties? I sure am interested.

Don't expect any warranty coverage of failed fuel injection pumps, injectors, injection nozzles or diesel engine components from your use of biodiesel.

Experiment with it after your warranty has run out and you can repair things yourself.

The city of Chicago tried to use a something like that in their buses. **** exhaust smelled like a McDonalds french fry:) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

In light of recent developments, namely much higher diesel prices even for fuel discounted as non-taxed off road red diesel this thread should be rekindled.

First, the folks over at the Diesel Stop forum have this specific sub-forum for this topic.

Second, bio-diesel's time has probably come, the Valero station nearby is selling petro-diesel for $3.40 a gallon as of 09/04/2005.

Third, yes, SVO (straight vegetable oil) can indeed be run in a diesel if it's heated, I forget the temperature needed, but it's not high, maybe around 80F degrees. Most SVO set ups start the engine on petro diesel, warm it up and then switch over to SVO from a separate tank. This requires a shut down on petro-diesel as well. This a lot of trouble for a car that's started and stopped frequently, but not so much on a tractor. The issues are secondary fuel tank location, and the heating and switching circuitry, and plumbing. There are small enterprises supplying most of this equipment with instructions.

Last, someone mentioned a book about brewing biodiesel, it's From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank: The Complete Guide to Using Vegetable Oil as an Alternative Fuel. I have a copy and it's most interesting, giving a lot of instruction on brewing biodiesel, via several methods, including the use of both methyl and ethyl alcohol and new or used vegetable oil.

For those in the San Francisco Bay area, there's even a group that will teach you how to make your own diesel in a hands on class, they give several classes per year, usually at least one every other month, sometimes more often. They have email lists that notify of the dates and times.

I only burn about 5 gals. a year. I would think you would have to live on one of these little tractors to pay for that set up. But I think the debate is great. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
