Can the BX do it

I'm with the flush cut crowd. I've got 3 or 4 in my front yard now that are flush
cut. One is a 18" Pine cut probably 6 years ago, still solid the others are Red
Cedar, they'll probably be there for another 30-40 years. The big Elm we flush
cut was covered over with mulch inside of a flower bed, it's slowly decaying
away, we can tell by having to add more mulch to that area. One thing with
flush cut if you have a lot dirt left on it where you're going to cut you might
want to get the garden and sprayer nozzle and wash it off before sticking a
chainsaw into it.

And if you don't take your chain and bar off to clean thoroughly. I flush cut a lot of small trees on our farms and that dirt will eat up your bar pretty quick.

I'm not a fan of stump grinders. I remove all the stumps from my yard.

This is a large-ish stump from a double trunk oak I pulled out about 6 months after getting my tractor. Not sure if it was related or not, but I got a backhoe less than 6 months later.

Getting a stump with a FEL isn't too tough, it just takes more time and requires more chopping than with a BH. Obviously. But it is INFINITELY better than going it alone. Done that, too. No fun.

The trouble with pine stumps is that there is that tap-root that goes straight down in a way that is impossible to get with a FEL, axe, and sometimes a BH. I had a particularly stubborn pine tree the other year where I dug 3 feet down on all sides and it STILL wouldn't come out. It would flop around on the tap root, but I couldn't get it out. It would have been funny if it wasn't so frustrating.

And I would not let my chainsaw within 10 feet of a stump excavation project. That is, I wouldn't let MY chainsaw...if you don't care about what happens to chain or bar, have at it. But a very small amount of grit will chew both to nothing in ~5 seconds. And I'm not exaggerating. If you don't believe me, get out there with a sawz-all. Done that, too. You'll be trying to cut with what looks like a butter knife in under a minute. Dirt and grit does amazing things, sometimes.

Have fun, though. The smaller ones will pop out quicker than you think. And the larger ones will irritate you to no end.

Now that is an interesting technique.

Red Dragon Propane Torch Kits - The best weed burner available! Vapor Torches, Liquid Torches, Jet Torches and The Weed Dragon.

I bought my in Menards for less than $20 few years back.

Pine stump is full of resin. It burns like a wick.
Most pine roots are very close to surface. It has one big shallow root straight down. If you sever the roots with something like subsoiler you might be able just to pull it out of ground.
When I was kid we used to remove pine stumps for heating with my grandpa. He severed the surface roots by an axe about 2 - 3 feet from the stump and then we pried each root up with a pickaxe until the stump came out. It was hard work but they gave out a lot of heat.

Invest in a few bags of charcoal. A few charcoal fires and you can just cover up the rest.

Depending on the soil type, if you have a toothbar, you can dig with a FEL. Wetting the soil to some degree ahead of time helps. I have dug several trenches with mine. If you have a subsoiler and some ballast on it and the rear, you can rip around the stump as well.

If they are all cut real close to the ground like that they will be tough to get out with a FEL, without a LOT of digging. I put the bucket of our M9540 (which is 95hp, 4wd, probably weighs around 10K) against a 12" dia pine stump that was about 6" above ground thinking I could just push it out, no way. With enough digging around it I'm sure I could have gotten it out, but I decided to just cut it off flush and leave it. The only way it's really effective to get something like that out with a loader is if there is at least a 4-5' tall 'stump' on it or preferably a whole tree. You can get a lot of leverage by pushing up high on the trunk, which combined with digging around the base you can get some decent sized trees out. I have gotten a few 6-8" dia trees out with my B3200 this way, however if I was just dealing with a stump I wouldn't have even tried it. If you are trying to dig a stump out, a back hoe (even a small one) is a much better tool than a loader.

I just did 7 oak stumps about 7-8 inches in diameter with the BH on my BX24. Took about 3-4 hours and alot of cursing. But they do come out

Cut 8feet up (if this is still an option) attach chain up high7ft mark and pull from 20-30 ft away. Any closer and you will just spin. Oh a 1/2 tonne truck with 4x4 should have no problems with this method...don't know about a bx.
