Can the BX do it

Getting spot on advice so far - I would say you may not want to mess with the ones in the yard - it may frustrate you. You don't want to be disappointed with your new toy, er tool...:D. The FEL is not really the right tool for the job and you may make a bigger mess than you would like

Now, the ones down in the woods could be good practice for FEL technique - digging around the base to pop the roots then pushing them over and dragging 'em out

Are you getting a tooth bar?

I have an 1860, same frame, slightly lighter, same everything other than hp is my understanding. It's not a great stump remover. And yes, initially I was a little disapointed until I realized the B in BX does not apparently stand for bulldozer. Anything under 3-4" a chain, bucket full of dirt and 4wd will get them out, but anything bigger it isn't working. I will watch this thread with interest since I dropped a dozen trees or so. The shovel, ax, and chain travel to the woods with me every trip now. Sometimes there is not an easy way, I chop all my trees and limb them by ax, bad childhood memories of chainsaws. Don't like them, plus it keeps me pretty for my lady:thumbsup:

So, I am waiting for the new BX2660 and I am already planning things that I want to tackle. I have about 13 pine tree stumps (pic attached) that are anywhere from 6" to 10" around.

Think there is a way the BX can get them out without a backhoe?

Burn them with propane torch.

I didn't order a toothbar. That might be later on down the road if it is something that I will definately need to clear underbush.

I did one once from a tree that blew over in a heavy wind. Stump was probably 20" across. Dug at it with hoe for the most of the morning then took an axe to the root before I could lift it out with the hoe. It was a much bigger job than I anticipated.

JsBx - - attacking pine stump with a FEL would be a chore. Digging enough to cut off below ground grade/flush is good advice. Also the advice about leving a taller stump will definitely help the removal process. On the other hand, pines are a real challange [as are gum trees] - - the tap roots go down forever.

RatchetRake is better for cleaning underbrush. Toothbar is more for popping bigger rocks up out of ground, RatchetRake better for popping up smaller rocks and leveling out ground.

I dug out about a 12" pine stump with my BX and the FEL. It took a couple of hours and I ended up with a pretty big hole. The easiest is to cut if off flush, but its nice to get it out of the ground. Here is a couple of pictures of it. You will notice I left a couple of feet sticking out of the ground, and I actually pulled it out with my truck.

I wouldn't waste my time with the FEL. As others said you will just make a mess and probably end up bending something.

Rent a stump grinder and be done in 5 minutes on something that small. I have a few stumps and while a BH works well, it is still easier to eat them up with a stump grinder.
