hi. im wondering if on the same internet line for residential home, is there any way to like split the internet usage and have 2 separate passwords, say one for your kids and one for your usage. every one is on (uses) the only wifi router which is fiber optic (just installed). kind of like the old telephones and 2nd line is kids and both are secure from the other..

thanks rob

Not sure what you're looking to do, but most routers have settings options that let you block out websites, set limits on hours of use (time of day), and set content limits on what is allowed through.

Assuming you're looking to set parental controls that is?

Hmm, you can, but might need to know what you mean by secure from the other. If you are worried someone will do something illegal, your kinda out of luck. You could run a whole slew of different things, pihole, manage DNS entries, host files, use a smart firewall. You could create another network on your router. Use VPN to the end point.

Rob,

Some of the wifi routers have a guest network. This way, you can use the normal home network and the kids can use the guest network. Both can have passwords setup. Now, a Linksys router and others can also allow access by hours per day M - Sun.

OpenDNS can also provide your wifi with parental controls too.

I've found that the 5G wifi setting with the kids streaming anything slowed the overall network down way too much. So, I've stepped it back to the normal 2.4G and no more issues. 5G worked good if you were close to the router, walk a few rooms away and it was very spotty and would keep dropping out.

I have two accounts on Hughesnet. Each has its own login credentials. However - just having this will not offer restricted access to any web site. I would have to go into either account and set any restrictions that I felt were required. Such as restriction for access to sites undesirable for kids. As I remember, without checking, Hughesnet allows up to six different accounts. Each with its unique set of login credentials.

Having multiple accounts with one or multiple internet providers has one drawback. The kids could always learn the credentials to the unrestricted account ..............

What are you trying to accomplish with 2 different passwords for internet access?

If you're trying to limit what your kids can do and see on the internet, you'd be better off putting parental controls on the devices the kids use.
