Can you help me determine if the air clearner on my ford 861D is original

we really aren't picking on you.
It certainly wasn't intended that way; it was just supposed to be a clarification on a point of confusion. I can't really say much about the intake itself, though--I have my grandfather's 861, but it's a gasoline-converted-to-propane-converted-back-to-gasoline tractor ( :D ), and its air cleaner looks nothing like that...

BTW, if you look at 09C04 Diesel Air Cleaner under Fuel System on this page:
861 4 CYL AG TRACTOR ALL PURPOSE
it looks a lot like the air cleaner in your picture. Whether it was a factory option, a dealer-installable option, or a later parts addition, I can't say, but it looks like it's a genuine Ford assembly.

Rick,

Knickers aren't in a knot. Now that the educational lesson is over, do you have any insight to the question? Which is;

Can you help me understand why Ford would have designed this air cleaner set-up this way. I guess one reason could be because it was the original design for the 861D (i.e. 1957-1958) and Ford changed the design in later year models or perhaps the different set-ups were specific to a particular farming application.

Your input specific to the question would be appreciated.

Thanks. Tom

Air cleaner assembly part # C0NN9600G and related parts are cataloged as previously indicated for Ford diesels 1963-1965 and as replacements for the square box oil bath air cleaner used on diesels 1958-1962. It appears that the original style air cleaner was inadequate in some way in certain conditions and ultimately discontinued. There may or may not have been some type of recall or program related to the upgrade of 58-62 production tractors because it is not uncommon to see the later unit on earlier tractors, but many remain with the original style.
