Wife and I are recently retired and we are planning on making a run out west in a few weeks. Going to hit the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody and then head to California to see the Redwoods and the Sequoia's. Was on the inter- net and it says that some of the Sequoia's are off limits this year do to heavy snow melt and washed out roads. Any of you live out there and can tell us if there is a chance we can go somewhere and see them? We know the Redwoods are in the upper west hand corner of California and it sounds like they are ok to see. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. BCM

Del Norte County/crescent city area & you're there at Redwoods National & State Parks. Yosemite might have flooding issues, but the coast should be ok ... From there you can head south on 101 & wind up in Muir Woods in Marin just north of SF. You can check road conditions once there & see if Yosemite's open when you are there. Take I-5 south to get you to Yosemite if it's open. You'll see lots of Redwoods on the trip south on 101, & lots of places you can stop along the way. Google is your friend on this.

If we remember correctly, Lady Bird Johnson grove is in Northern California around Orick Ca. We drove down the coast from southern Wa. on Hwy 101 just poking along. The whole trip was spectacular, so many things that what was where is a little blurry 20 yrs later. Cam

Just had some good friends try to do that trip and the sequoia national park sequoias are mostly off limits at the moment due to snow, though there are some outside the park. They did get into Yosemite ok. The redwoods start just north of Santa Cruz (Big Basin, but they were burned around several years ago), and the Muir woods in Marin have lots to see. If you follow the coast north of San Francisco towards Arcata, Mendocino, Ft. Bragg, and Crescent City all have redwoods to see.

All the best,

Peter

Thanks fella's. Really appreciate the heads up on this. I've planted over 20,000 trees here and sure would like to see those big guys. Thanks again. BCM

If the Yosemite trees are out of reach. Just a bit north of Yosemite on Highway 4 is California Big Trees State Park. There are a couple of Sequoia groves there and some pretty large Sugar Pines as well.

Yes it is. It's a moderate hike, easy if you're a hiker. I lived on the north coast and the grove is worth checking out. There are other hikes to redwoods in Redwood National Park as well.

I think that the Avenue of the Giants is pretty good. There's a bunch of little state parks in there, just pick some, stop and walk around. It follows a river so most are close to the river.

The storms we had this year also hit the north coast but not as bad as central and southern CA.

A significant number of sequoias have burned in the last few years. Some will survive and some will not. Sequoia national park has the best known groves but also had a number of fires. A favorite of mine is Calaveras big trees state park. Not as spectacular as Sequoia but fewer people.

The high country still has a lot of snow and many passes are still closed. Water will be high for a couple months but most places not high up should be accessible. The popular national parks like Yosemite have instituted a permit system and some parks require permits for certain places. Check their web sites or call before going.

Headed there this weekend. Calaveras Big Trees is a nice place to visit. When they say big trees, they really mean it!
