Gentlemen, I know the difference between a 55 and a 56. I was not confused.

The last 56 I redid was about 5 years ago. I had 256 tine bar bearings on the shelf, and they did not fit. When I went to Messiks to get the right ones, one package (bearing, shield and new clip) was labeled for 56, and the other package was labeled 256 and 258. Now maybe they had some really old stock, and the bearing has been changed to fit all now. But at the time I did that rake, that was what happened to me.

Moved on to rotary rake 5 years ago, and will never go back to this old technology.

Well if you are talking about those blister pack 'kits', all bets are off. Half the stuff in them was mislabelled. Individually packaged New Holland service parts are not labelled by application.

Where would I find or how do I replace the cable that engages the gear box?

It seems like a good bit of tension on that clutch cable wat keeps it disengaged?

The cable and the over-center lever the cable attaches to at the front of the rake keep it disengaged. A spring inside the gearbox keeps the jaw clutch engaged when the cable is slack.

the 56 has the fold down jack like on the 55's the rake in the pictures is a 256 and the only difference between a 56 and 256 is the jack on the 256 that crank's down instead of fold down. All other parts will interchange on the 56 and 256 rakes

the differnce between the 55's and 56 is the 55 has a straight shaft between the wheels and on the 56 the right hand wheel is placed further ahead and has a shaft between the two wheels that contains u joint on each end.

it could range between 350-2500 just depends on the teeth the bearing in the end of the bars and the bearings in the stars on each end also the over all shape of the rake also would need to check the bushing's in the hubs

Information is not completely correct we have a 256, a 56, and a 55 and the the 56 was bought new with the same exact jack as the 256 the only difference is in the basket with the 1/8inch metal that helps hold the basket to the 2 bars that hold the adjustments I can take pics later to prove but the 56 is all one bar that is bent while the 256 is 3 sperate straight bars plus a few grease fittings that the 56 does not have
