Can you identify this?

Need some help identifying what looks to me to be an old sickle bar mower. What once was my Grandad's tobacco farm in southern VA is now mostly grown over. Occasionally I get up there to walk around and from time to time I will run across a relic from my Grandad's past. All I can tell you about this is that it appears the sickle bar is bent into a circle, and the brand name "OLIVER" is stamped into one of the front tubes. Does anyone know an approximate date this item was manufactured?

U identifed it, old Oliver Sicklebar Mower. It is a horse drawn model, note the seat. Probaly 20's or 30's, the bar is in bad shape, it should be straight. Looks to be a yard ornament if you want to drag it out of the woods.

Yup. Spent the better part of my youth sitting on the seat, pushing the pedals to raise the bar if a rock was coming.

Ours was a John Deere, pulled by my dad driving the Massey Harris, ala my avatar.

I made an effort to pull it out by hand but it's completely frozen solid to the ground. Tractor wasn't much use to me since it has a blown radiator hose. In fact I would have been on the tractor and not hiking around out in the woods so it's because of the stupid radiator hose that I found it in the first place. When life gives you lemons ... you know the rest.

gotrocks, I would say it is very similar if not exactly the same. Of course mine is missing some parts, the wood parts are mostly rotted away and some of it appears to be buried under years of leaves and dirt, but overall they look alike.

I have two of them. They are nothing but lawn ornaments for the last 50 years or so..........
