Anyone have any idea on how to move a pole barn? It is really more of a giant carport (no sides) but has prebuild rafters and such. It is just in a bad spot.. I would love to move it but not sure how and or if it is worth it.

Not knowing the size, how would pick it up? Can it be taken apart? That would work

I would think it would be easier to move if it has metal poles than wood poles. Metal would be easier to brace (by welding), then just jack up out of the ground, back a trailer under it and go. But like MrJimi said, with out knowing more, size, construction (wood or metal), it will be hard to suggest anything more.

Depending on the size of it, you could easily spend more money than it's worth in bracing.

Remember, all "Pole" buildings gane there strength from the poles being in the ground. Once those poles come out of the ground, or are cut off, the entire building becomes unstable. You have to brace it in all directions and tie the poles together to keep it intact.

It's very questionable wether the time spent bracing it up is faster than just taking it all apart and reasembaling it. The deciding factor really is in how small a building it is?

I wouldn't do it.

Back in the mid 1960, farmer accross the road moved a steel silo from one barn to another using "old yeller". Ex military truck with a steel truck frame mounted on hoist on back... he could move just about anything using that home made truck rig.

There are companies that move buildings like houses and churches. It might be better to have the barn moved by people who do this for a living and are insured. Just my 2 cents.

If it is a true pole barn structure I would think the only way to move it is to take it apart and then put it back together where ever you want it. Trying to brace it in every direction will be pretty hard to do.

Just my two cents.

Can you move a pole barn?

No.

It's probably impossible to "move" it by picking it up and putting it somewhere else. Well, not impossible, I guess it could be done with a lot of time, money, equipment, effort, man-power, and heart-ache. But by that time it would be cheaper to just build a new one and detroy and dispose of the other one!

I'd consider disassembling it and rebuilding it at the desired site.

I am digging for photos, but I have kind of decided to kill this idea. If I had a crane (like big construction type) maybe I could get it to go, but it is clear it will not survive any move. And frankly, it is not worth it to spend any money removing and rebuilding.

I am following the steel buidlings thread. Now have to figure on how to tell the wife I need 80K...
