I got this device from a family member last year. It is quite effective for breaking up packed dirt. He called it a chisel, but I wondered if anyone knew anymore about it. It's orange, so I assume it's made by Kubota /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Actually, I wonder if it isn't an old road-crew piece?

most would call it a scarifier but chisel works to much the same. That looks home made to me but allis chalmers also was orange and if it were factory would fit the area

It looks like the rippers (some say scarifiers) you might see behind a dozer.

Jayc, ripper and scarifiers do have a diffrence too. scarifiers will penatrait the ground about a 1' a set of rippers over a foot and are much hevier, i know it's stupid tecno stuff but the 143H cat grader i run at work (thats my main job durring the summer) has both, scarifier for light frost or hard dirt, and ripper teeth for big rocks leadge and such. scarifiers are 1" wide,i have snaped those off, and rippers are 2" wide steel cappable of 18" depth i haven't broke one of those the ripper/scarifier is on back solid mt. to rear frame, cats other option is to mnt. to front frame behind tires and infront of blade, that makes so you can blade off any small stones as yougo the ripper canot be mt. forward because off stresses it would apply.

So there is a difference? I thought they were the same thing. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I think I like the term "ripper" better though. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks! Did some online searches on Pasture Renovators & got some good info. It may come in handy after the horses work the pasture over this year.

Well, I finally got around to trying the pasture restorer out today. I only got two passes near the edge of the field before it started to pour, but I think I'll let it go at that until I see how it works. I notice that it had the added advantage of pulling up a lot of vine-like roots of other plants that were creeping in from the stone row.
