Having only lived here less than two years, I am still learning the laws so I may be incorrect about this. You do not even have to tag a trailer in KY if you do not want to. If you do tag it, there is no stated weight value to it. The tow vehicle covers the combination, trailer plated or not.

I think they add the axles on a trailer. A tandem axle trailer is at least 7000lb and is pulled by at least a 4000lb vehicle so almost any tandem rig is way over the 1001lb rating.

there is a difference between US DOT and state DOT for sure, don't know if I ever saw a State Dot # on a vehicle.

These are US DOT numbers that we are talking about.

How about any modern F350 or equivlent
Wow...I stand corrected on that...

Nevertheless...seeming as you almost CAN'T get a F-Series Super Duty UNDER 10,000 GVWR, clearly we're talking about commercial vehicles.

Seems I don't know what the heck I'm talking about anyway. I'll just politely back away...Carry on!:)

My understanding of us DOT #'s are if you are for hire or over 26001 lb's you need one

private or for hire requires a dot number.

PA residents only need them if you are commercial and travel interstate.

private or for hire requires a dot number.

Most states, except for KY for example, they are required for commercial only.

I used to live in PA. A few years back there was some discussion there about bringing the magic number 26,000 down to something like 17,000 or 17,500 but it went away thank goodness.

Would anybody be upset if I lived in shameful, naive ignorance of all this stuff? I know my rig is over 10k# GCVW, but I also know my rig is safe.

I also know I'm never going to loan it out or hire myself out.

Do "normal guys" pulling "normal trailers" get pulled over for this stuff? My Dad just went to Abequerque and back (from Yorktown, VA...some 5,000 miles round trip), towed his 12,000# 5th wheel, had no DOT sticker, and had no problems.

What am I missing?

Are you commercial.

If not then 99% of this doesn't apply to you.
