Can you use a metric socket on a sae bolt? socket set questions.

Nobody has mentioned the HF black impact deep socket sets. $20 per set, SAE or Metric, including a steel box. Cheap and indestructible, at least in my experience. Why pay more?

Yep, good sockets.

I did break a 22mm one though. Couldn't get a lug nut off the front of a F150.

Tried a regular Craftsman chrome plated. Broke pretty easy with a 2' cheater.

Upped to the HF. 1/3" drive socket, HF adapter up to 3/4" HF breaker bar and 4' pipe + smoke wrench. Broke that socket jumping on the end of pipe.

Ended up letting things cool back down and drilling the stud out. Was doing a brake job so once apart replacing the stud and lug nut was pretty easy.

Might I add that I hate tire shops that just like to hammer things on with an impact rather than use a torque wrench

Well yeah that might do it. 200 lbs 4 ft out is 800 ft/lbs, plus count 50% more for jumping on the pipe ...

Way over torqued lug nuts: I took my new Subaru back to the Ford/Subaru dealer for its first 10k mile service. Idiot mechanic torqued the lugnuts so tight it bent the front rotors and now the brakes shuddered. I put up with that for a couple of months then had to replace the front rotors (at a different shop!) on a nearly new car.

That Ford/Subaru dealership went out of business not long after that. Must have been a po'ed mechanic who worked on my car.
