Can you use "smart phone" without the internet part?

My wife and I just use $100/yr throwaway phones. Don't even know how to store numbers in it. Use it for emergencies and to call her.

Right now, it's my watch, too. Got tired of keeping batteries in my watches. Doesn't do pictures.

I only know the major players in the US. With ATT you can have a smart phone and use it with a voice only plan. You will not have any access to data through the carrier. Verizon will not allow a smart phone to be registered onto the network WITHOUT a data plan.

One additional benefit, even without a normal carrier connection, the phone can still be used in emergencies to call 911. All carriers are required to accept and handle 911 calls from all phones whether they are on their network or not.

Are you sure on this? My IPhone 6 & older 4 work without data I think. The 6 I can turn the cell data off and it still makes and receives calls. The 4 I use for backpacking and it does calls, camera, maps, ebook, etc without a data plan but when in a town or home the WIFI works with it to web surf and get email. I'm with Verizon.

If it is an I phone you can text ( iMessage ) other I phones as long as you have wifi. You can FaceTime as long as you have wifi, but you can't call without a data plan.

you can always buy a smartphone and not put it on a network.

My wife has a smartphone on ATT with no data plan. She can use apps with wifi. She also can text with it.

I use PagePlus which uses the Verizon system. I put a certain amount of credit on it (minimum $10/ 120 days) and use up the credit with calls, texts and / or data. Phone has to be an off lease Verizon phone or unlocked phone. Also works on wifi for other tasks.
