Just got off the phone with Canada Customs and he states the tractor would be "duty free" if it was manufactured in the US as per the NAFTA agreement. I explained the parts were shipped to the US and assembled in the US. He advised I check with my local dealer to confirm it qualifies under NAFTA. Reading Junkmans's post it seems it is considered to be a US manufactured item. One of the Canadian dealers I was speaking with last week had said there was no duty on Kubota's, but he had no explanation for the significant price difference. I also am starting to get e-mail responses from various dealers. One in the US (NY) confirmed the 15,500 pricing that I keep seeing here, but I would also have to pay NY sales tax (Don't know how much) That translates to $18,600 (before NY sales tax) Canadian roughly, well below the $23,200 I got quoted. Another Canadian dealer responded this morning advising he would neither sell nor quote a price to me as I had a local dealer here. He forwarded his response to the local dealer and Kubota.ca as well as me.

I would check with dealers in NH since it is closer and there is no sales tax in NH. Even if the cost is higher, then the savings will be in the gas saved by not driving to NY. I believe that the content of the machine that is manufactured in the States is sufficient to qualify it as an American made product. The only parts that I know of for certain that come from Japan are the engine. I am not certain where the hydro is manufactured. All the rest is American made.
As for the dealer forwarding your request to the dealer near you and Kubota Canada, I believe that they are just trying to maintain there higher profit margins by not dealing outside of there territory. This in the US would be considered price fixing and is a violation of law, when two or more companies agree to fix prices at a certain level. Canada might be different. I have no experience with Canadian Law....

Junkman. this might be the attitude of this one dealer only as I have recieved quotes from 2 other dealers in Canada that are farther from me than my local dealer. I have to agree with you on the price fixing observation. They can call it "area protection" or whatever they want, but if they refuse do even give a price so that I can make a considered decision, then I take exception to that. Thanks as well for the no sales tax info in New Hampshire. Definitely worth factoring into the equation.

I bought an m5400 kubota from Canada in 1999 as the dealer was only 20 miles from my home in the states. There was no duty on the tractor or Canadian taxes , but you must pay state sales tax in your state if you have one.The dealer can cross the border to do any maintenance and even take the tractor back across the border if necessary. The reason I did buy from Canada was yes to save money but they were so much closer as a dealer to do business with.I understand now that you can't buy new Kubota tractors and cross the border as dealers in the states put up a stink as they were losing business, at least in my state anyway. The Canadian folks do an awful lot of business here in the states along our borders and it is much appreciated as they can save money on certain items as well. so I didn't see any problem with it.I saved much more than just a couple hundred dollars back then. The nearest Kubota dealer here in the states is about 120 miles from where I live.

That price around here would never happen. The price of $15,500 (USA) for the BX23 is a steal within a 150 miles radius of my house. Most are about 2 to $3K more
