I've had my canopy on my 2710 for about 3 months now and had mentioned that it made the tractor louder. It was even more apparent today. Not only could I not hear the football game I had on my earphones, but it is so loud I'm thinking I might now need some sort of ear protection. This time last year I was listening to ball games with no problem (didn't have the canopy then).

I'm wondering if some kind of material could be attached to the underside of the canopy to absorb some of this noise so that its not reflected right back into my ears.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Alan,
My canopy has black board insulation on it. It doesn’t sound any louder after I put the canopy on than it did before. You might try some to see if it would make yours quieter.

Alan, I never drove my B2710 without the canopy, but I think Jerry's right. Does your canopy have any kind of insulation on the bottom side?

Yeah, Alan, mine has sound absorbing stuff on the underside. Actually it's just a big piece of soft foam like you can get for a buck at any upholstery shop. I also have mine mounted up high. If you don't have a garage restriction you might try raising it up.

No insulation - just a solid surface underneath. Sounds like I need to glue some foam rubber up there before I go deaf.

Alan, you might want to invest in hearing protectors in any event. I use the earmuff kind. I listen to a radio with foam in-ear phones, and the phone wire just dangles down from the muffs. You will be surprised how much of a racket your tractor makes when you take the hearing protectors off.

Bottom line: Better for your hearing. Better for radio listening.

Egg crate foam is used in many speaker systems, to break-up and absorb the back-wave. Depending on the frequencies involved, this would probably work better then just a flat sheet. You can find this in Walmart (matress pad). The colors might not go well with you tractor, though. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif The real, charcoal colored accoustic foam (2' X 3') can be had at a number of speaker supply houses. It comes in two thicknesses, and costs around $5-10 a sheet. I've used Eastman77 spray adheasive, to hold in place.

Sounds like the egg-crate stuff is the way to go. I'll try it out and report back.

Bsauter that must be a good CD rig you have there. For it to work with all that bouncing and vibration says something about the quality.

The way to go is called asphalt sheathing. It is $6 a 4x8 sheet and get it at a lumber yard. It is a fiber material with asphalt on it. The main use for it now is to line air conditioner plenums for noise reduction. This is the material used by Wells for their canopies. I put it under my canopy when I built it and have no noise problem at all.
