Canopy Makes it Loud!

I drive a FORD 4000 and a FORD 3930, both with exhaust along the left bottom and to the rear. I don't care for it myself. Lots of diesel exhaust pouring in my face as I hook up the 3 pt hitch. Also, they put black soot all over the left side of the implement.

I like the Kubota M6800 exhaust, excepot that after the last big rain I started the tractor and it blew black soot water all over me and the tractor.

Now I have a orange bottle I slip over the pipe. If I forget to remove it, it launches on engine start!

I feel so dignified " Mountain William" how about "Sir Mountain William"?Except I am not English.I work in industry and when I leave the "control room" it is very noisy out in the field and hearing protection is a must,I have the ear muffs on my hard hat,but I prefer the foam plugs. We use to have the yellow e.a.r plugs, but now have an even softer type that are green in color. I even wear them when I sleep during the day when I working nights.Thats another reason I am staying up so late tonight I have to try and get adjusted for midnights.

Well, that would kill any benefit of any reduction in noise, if any. I am sure you used an orange bottle for safety reasons! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

JohnS, Thanks for noticing. The bane of us emoticon impaired writers is that sometimes our humor through excess or whatever literary device goes unappreciated. Yeah, there are serious engineering challenges in active noise cancellation. So far the best success stories not involving sea water (that I recall with my impaired memory) have been earphones and to a limited degree automobiles where in some instances the firewall is used as a reference noise source and the vehicle's high dollar sound system provides the cancelling signal. This was a few years ago, don't know if that was continued or dropped as I don't follow many import sedans. My last big "Buy American" expedition netted a Dodge dually diesel (made in Mexico) that has a superb sound system and considerable sound treatment but could still use some active cancellaltion.

Patrick (Yet another low tech ploy, foiled, I tried copy/paste of one of your emoticons. You know what they say, ya gotta be smarter than the thing you are trying to control....oh well.)

Yeah HillBilly, I always thought the yellow ones we got were uncomfortable. they were cylindrical and flat on both ends while the green (blue?) ones are flat on one end and tapered/rounded on the other and feel softer but seem to expand just fine and work good. For a while I tried the ones with ridges that were on a curved piece of plastic so they resembled a headset that went inside trather than over the ears. One size does not fit all. They weren't real comfortable and were a tad tight for me. Boy were they handy. They weren't in the way so much dangling around your neck and were easy to pop in and out quickly just not comfortable for more than a few minutes, for me at least.

My Kubota L4610HSTC cab is a bit loud above about 2000 RPM. I carry a set of soft, fairly good sealing muffs, just leave them hanging from the FEL joystick. I always shop for the maximum db reduction but without active cancellation never see anything over about 24 but generally around 19-21. Tech note: although 19 to 21 or 21 to 24 is only 3 units out of 20 or so, don't think this is only 14-15% or so difference. WRONG! each 3 db is twice as loud so muffs rated at 24 only pass 1/4 as much sound as muffs rated at 19 and similarly 21 is twice as good as 19.

Now if I had not been exposed to so much high volume gunfire and explosions without hearing protection I would have more hearing left to protect. Guard what you have jealously, many employers, supervisors, and coworkers don't care.

With all of the talk about decibals you ought to be working in the safety department giving the tests.
The green ear plugs are 'Pura-Fit"6800 manufactured by Moldex-Metric INC.The ones on the string are ok,but I prefer the soft foam disposables./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

"My last big "Buy American" expedition netted a Dodge dually diesel (made in Mexico) "

I got lucky. My 2500 was made in St. Louis. I saw an ISB engine apart at the Cummins dealership, though, and the rods were cast in Mexico.

HIllBilly, Aye laddie, disposable ones are fine and as my Irish heritage was tainted with Scotts-Irish I'm ever so thrrrrrrifty mon and just run 'em through the wash with m' clothes (little mesh bag handily locates them).

Patrick (not a practicing acoustician allthough I have talked to several)

Acoustics quiz: If Hellen Keller fell down in the woods, would she make a sound?
