I am making some "driver protection", which includes adding a canopy. What have people applied to the underside of canopys to lessen noise?
Have been searching here with no luck.
My thought is to use "Truck Bed" spray, because it has a texture. Or...a thin sheet of styrofoam glued on.
What have you had good results with? Thanks.

I'm going with bedliner top and bottom, waiting for it's arrival so I'll let you know how it turns out.

Both of my tractors that have/had canopies, were NH.. they used aluminum diamond plate sheeting for the canopy, and angle / square iron for the canopy support and brackets to the rops.. U bolts holding it to the rops.. no drilling or welding.

Now.. on the underside.. it looks almost like a piece of chip or wafer board as we call it here in florida. ( Not particle board.. and not plain plywood.. but the stuff made with chips in the 2-3" range )... looks like a 1/2 inch piece. Could be some other material that is textured? like some kind of glued and pressed padding.. etc... just can't be sure.

I have O.E.M. canopies on 2 of my 3 tractors. (Deere and Massey) The Massey doesn't have anything for sound deadening. It should. The Deere has a foam "insert" that quiets things down somewhat.

One thing to realize, canopies generate their own noise. Vibration (especially bad at "road speed") sets them to making quite a racket at times. I've heard that on a number of brands.

Best answer I have is to buy a good set of headphones!

My NH canopy is a bit different. It is the steel canopy with a smooth finish with some type of rubber matting underneath that appears to be about 1/4 in thick.

For the price of the canopy - it should have been lined with gold or had a free tank of fuel thrown in with purchase /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe you can see detail on the attached pic

Shazzam.. that canopy looks darn nice.. I'll bet it was a pretty penny.

Both of my NH cannopies are what the dealer called 'the old style' Just bent/ formed aluminum diamond plate, and some sort of fiberboard backing, and brackets.. course.. he only charged me something like 320$ as well.. and had the service guy install them (free) before delivering the tractor to me. I was happy... I don't care if they are old or not.

I'd get that looked at if i were you... My NH1920 canopy was solid as a rock.. no noise.. no vibration. ( traded it in ) My Nh 7610s obviously a much bigger tractor.. also has a solid canopy.. no vibration.. no noise.. and I do road it every time i mow.. about 18 mph ( 4 mile round trip ) down the highway, and a piece of a dirt / limerock road as well.

The only ratle is my left fender... It's crumpled a bit.. well.. straightened mostly.. but some crumpling. At road speed it vibrates noticeably.. but no noise...

The canopies on Deere's XX30 series through XX55 series (Dubuque, Waterloo, or Mannhiem tractors) that have the shape of the roof on a SoundGuard cab have a distinctive rumble to them when you slow down from road speed. I've been on dozens of them. Nothing to worry about. The shell of the canopy is fiberglass, with a steel re-enforcment. The fiberglass gives it a "drum noise" under certain conditions.

Possibly Dynamat? I use it for sound deadening rattles buzzes etc in my cars with rather large stereo systems in em. I also used it under the hood of my pickup, quieted the noise from the diesel engine right down in the cab.

That would deffinately keep me from owning one of those models.. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I couldn't have a canopy that moved like that.

I like My rigid NH one...
