Canopy Noise

I should have a canopy for my tractor in a few weeks. I don't know if this will work but you might try the expandable foam that comes in a aerosol can. It can be trimed smooth and painted. Would offer great sound absorpation and insulation.

We have a large foam machine at work and I am going to do some experiments and see how it works. If it would happen to fall out it should be form fitted and be able to gule in.

Man, you always get the good deals /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If I could have found a metal canopy elsewhere you can bet I would have. I looked for other aternative sources for awhile and finally decided I was playing russian roulette by not having it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was looking for a steel canopy mainly to protect my head from falling limbs and such, as I don't mind the sun. It weren't cheap especially since it came from NH, but then again I figured the alternative was not an option.

The NH fiberglass model for my TN was quoted at almost $500 /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Try a refrigeration company. They have foam rubber sheet insulation in various thickness that will glue on. They may even have scraps big enough for your job.

They don't "MOVE", just have a slight vibration when backing down from road speed. The fact that they have a fiberglass roof makes them produce some noise. They're solid enough that I have stood on them while repairing a barn door. (I'm 6'-4", 280lbs) No movement then either.

I've owned a New Holland (Ford)(4620. Short-lived stay with me. It had constant fuel injection pump troubles. Believe it was "messed with" by previous owner) with their ROPS . It had just as much vibration (or movement) as the Deere, just didn't have the sound to go along with it. I doubt any 2-post ROPS attached canopy would be completely vibration free in all instances.

I had the "spray foam" in the back of my mind, but was afraid to bring it to the front. I will be interested in your experiment.
My canopy will be alum. I assume it would stick to this?

Also, because of the good comments, I am now considering putting a "weatherstrip" type layer between the frame and the top itself. This should take care of rattles.

Thanks all for the good ideas.
As my wife keeps reminding me, I guess I don't know everything....

It shouls stick if you have a lip around the canopy like the fiberglass ones. The pressure of the foam expansion should hold it in also.
If you try the foam it may be a good idea(we do this in our shipping department) lay a thin piece of plastic, (trash bag would do) on the inside of your canopy as a release agent and spray the foam in it. Once it dries you should be able to pop it out of the canopy and have a form. You could then use a couple beads of liquid nails to gule the foam form in. Using the plastic would also help in removing it if you did not like the outcome.

We use this method to keep the foam from sticking to metal parts when shipping. Of course the industrial type foam may be a little stronger than the aerosol can. But I have used the aerosol can on projects at home and once dry it is pretty tough.

If your cannopy rattles and sqweeks, use WD-40 where it contacts the frame and around bolts and screws and everything will be quiet for weeks.

I just finished my canopy, used Herculiner top and bottom. I haven't had a chance to work it yet, but it wasn't too loud without the coating. Here's a pic
