I am having great difficulty connecting the hydraulic è³*uick connect? Too much back pressure. It started out hard to connect a grapple bucket hydraulics and now we cannot connect it at all. Two strong young (21 & 30) sons cannot do it so what advice do you have. We have a 2005 John Deere 317 skid steer and have never used the hydraulic quick connects until now. Any help appreciated.

I just experienced the same issue trying to hook up a skid steer mounted splitter. It was cold when I removed the splitter and was in the 100 degree range when I tried connecting it. I was able to remove the expansion pressure by loosening a fitting at the cylinder. Also I always shut the machine off and cycle the valve for the aux hydralics too.

With a solid system like a cylinder just a 70 degree temp range can build up a lot of pressure. Usually you can wrap a rag around the quick connects and pumch the center portion down to relieve pressure, but when that fails loosening a fitting is the only option I have had success using. I took a minor oil bath when I relieved the pressure so a rag placed over the fitting might be advisable.

There have been quite a few threads on TBN covering this subject which leads me to believe it is a pretty common deal.

Are you trying to connect while the engine is running?

On the male QD, most people can push the male QD on a flat steel surface, and push the ball or poppet in to relieve pressure.

Most skid-steers have the flat face QD connectors, and some can connect under pressure.

You could make a dummy plug for the implement QD, and the pressure will never build up.

For the dummy setup, take an opposite QD and fit a PVC pipe about 8 in long with a PVC cap. Stuff it with a rag, and attach to the dummy QD to absorb the outflow, and plug it in the QD.

Store this setup in the vertical position so fluid will not just drain out.

Engine is not running when we try to connect. I will try to push in center of female QD after covering with a rag. Then I will try the PVC pipe solution. I will post results. Thank you

If your grapple has a "open / close" switch on the joystick you need to cycle this switch with the tractor ignition switch in the "on" position to relieve the pressure in the lines. Also do not forget to lower your 3 point hitch.

I ended up having the John Deere dealer pick it up as it is time for service anyway. See what they come up with. Thanks for the help everyone. I will post the outcome.

I have loosened the threads at the quick coupler from the hose and released a little pressure when I had that problem

The dealer returned the skid steer with:

1). a new QD on the female side of the grapple bucket

2). told me to shut the motor off and then move the unlocked right lever all the way to the left and then all the way to the left. I can hear a sound and pressure is relieved.

3). QD's go on and off with very little effort.

Hope this helps someone.

You will still build up pressure in a disconnected implement on a hot day. This is where the most problems originate.

I connect the male and female connectors together on the bucket or grapple when it is not hooked up to the tractor. That way the pressure does not build up as bad since both cylinder sides can free flow between each other.

Some people have males on the tractor side and just females on the implement side, (or vice versa). It's better to have a male and a female on the implement and the tractor side so they can be connected together when not in use. It also keeps the ends from collecting dirt or having to wrap the end in a rag.
