I haven't used my splitter in a while and when I hooked it up I hooked the lines backwards. I tested it going up and then back down and of couse you have to hold it all the way up but it goes down by itself. For some reason once I disconnected and tried to connect the hoses the correct way I can't get it on. I did leave the splitter in a halfway position, but it seems that there is so much pressure on it that the little ball in the hose won't go in.

Any easy fixes for this?

Thanks

The male connectors will have either a cone or a ball sticking a little ways out the end. One of those is likely being forced outward with such pressure that it won't retract far enough for the QD to latch. When that happens to mine, I simply push the cone/ball against an immovable object, usually a flat spot on the tractor or implement itself.

Every single time this has happened (to me), it's been on an implement hose end. So rather than be tempted to poke something into the tractor half of the coupling, work on the implement end first

Greg's on the right path, but I'll add to wrap a rag around the fitting before you smack it against whatever you're going to smack. The oil under pressure will spray a rather wide area if you don't.

It happens a lot, usually to the implement hoses rather than the tractor hydraulics, as Greg said. My grapple sits outside, and if it is warmer when I hook it up than it was when I unhooked it, there's no question that the lines will have to be depressurized before I can hook it up.

To add to what the others have said, if you feel bad about smacking your fittings, you can always loosen the fitting with a wrench and let it relieve itself that way. Draping a rag over the fitting as you loosen it is also a good procedure.

I did that for a couple years, then my impatience took hold one day.

I keep a 1" (?) copper pipe cap handy and slide that over the fitting and then wrap a rag around it befor rapping on it. Makes me feel like the copper won't scar the ball. Not sure that is true but it is easy enough for me and it works great.

I like that idea a lot! Thanks!

As much as not scarring the fitting, I've got one style of fitting that pokes a hole in my shop rag every time I do this. Not that they're fine linen or anything :confused2:, but I do like them to last.

I got the cap idea on this site. It does direct the fluid back up torwards the hose, but as long as you grip it with a rag it's no problem. You're right about the holes in the rags too!

Once your equipment gets older you will just rap the ball with a chunk of hardwood,(hammer handle) or bang the hose against a fender.....especially when its 20 below and the snow is 30" deep.

Thanks for all of the replys, sounds unanimous. I will smack the ball on the spliiter hose and if that doesn't do it I'll loosen a fitting. ;)
