Can\'t delete an icon

Ok, this is getting frustrating. I tried to install The Weather Channel's Desktop Weather. The dumb thing doesn't install. I always get the error report to send to Microsoft and something about TODO doing an error. Well, when I went to my Control Panel There was an icon there for the Desktop Weather. I uninstalled the program. When I right-click on it I only get two options - Open and Create Shortcut. Nothing happens when I press delete or move it to the Recycle Bin. How the heck can I get rid of this thing? I reinstalled the program numerous times thinking I may be able to get rid of it if the program is installed, but that doesn't work either. I would uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Try restarting your computer and see if that fixes it.

I once installed the Weather Channel gadget, too. It was so intrusive and worked so flaky that I wanted it GONE. I forget what all I had to do to get rid of it, but it wasn't pretty. The thing has some significant adware issues, too. I can't help you, but I wanted you to know you aren't alone.

I've restarted the computer many times. That doesn't do anything. The icon just stays there.

I am using WeatherBug, though. I have been using that program for a couple years now. I have heard all the stories about it being spyware and such. I really don't believe it. I find it a far too useful program. I just thought I would give The Weather Channel's version a try.

Try this.

Go to the Windows\System folder and delete the .cpl file that corresponds to the icon you want to remove.

BE CAREFUL and delete only the one you want. WARNING.

I had the same problem with WEATHERBUG.... I was able to uninstall the program, but couldn't get all of the other associated garbage that it installed gone. I finally did a search for "weatherbug" and when I located all the files with "weatherbug" in them I deleted them all. I haven't had a problem since. Uninstall doesn't remove the tracking part of the program, just the program itself.

I've never had any problems with WeatherBug, but that Weather Channel program was a whole other story. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

On a different note, whenever I got an error with that Weather Channel program something about a framework was mentioned. Did I have to have Microsoft's .Net Framework?

It was problems like these that caused me to start using Weather Underground www.wunderground.com. Good presentation and also if you send them $5:00 a year - NO ADS !!! Take a look.
