Re: Can\'t Delete Virus

Yeah, that happens. I think the decision to create a removal tool is based on the threat level. However, they always provide manual removal instructions. Did you read this?

Yes, thanks. I did use that very page.

Re: Can\'t Delete Virus

Are you still getting funky messages on start-up? If so, write down the name of the missing file, start your registry editor (either regedit or regedt32 from the Run box) and do a search for that file name. If it finds something, don't delete it if you're not sure about the results. Rather, post the registry path here so that we can decide if it's safe.

This may or may not be a result of a trojan or virus. Sometimes it happens as a result of a poorly written uninstall program.

Yes, I do still get a window of sorts at bootup. It goes away on its own after a few seconds. I'll post better info when I get home. I appreciate your help.

Re: Can\'t Delete Virus

Jerry,
Something is causing Windows to run a program from a command prompt, i.e. cmd.exe. I did a search at microsoft.com on cmd.exe and got lots of hits. You might try to look at some of them to get an idea of whats going on.

Re: Can\'t Delete Virus

Suggest you boot from a clean DOS diskette.. get Windows out of the way completely. Then navigate to and delete the file. You may need to set the protections on it to allow deletion.

When Windows is running, it holds some files open so they can't be deleted. When you boot from a DOS diskette, those files are free to be renamed or deleted. Make sense?

Best...........Bob

p.s. oops, didn't realize you'd already solved the problem.. been a hectic day and I didn't read carefully enough! Anyway, glad you solved it! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Can\'t Delete Virus

Like the Inspector said, something is calling the cmd.exe program on startup. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - it depends on what program is calling it.

For kicks, open regedit and check the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Check what values are in there. These are the things that will run every time you boot your machine.
