Bob, put a jackstand or something else substantial - wood blocks, from the FLAT ground all the way up to the axle case on the side you are working on. As the tire deflates that side of the tractor will rest on this and the tire will not fully flatten and [perhaps] de bead. The valve core screws out CCW using a core tool. Some metal valve caps have them built in-a little forked spanner at the end. You may want to have a new core on hand to replace it with. There are 2 kinds. You will want the type without the exposed spring.

Thanks for the details! I assume this core tool is something I can get at a local car parts store???
Bob

PS I will brace the tractor as you suggest.

If you have NO experience of working on tires, e.g. have NEVER taken a schrader valve apart on a car or motorcycle tire, even a bicycle tire, you will have a HUGE surprise when the air rushes out. It isn't an explosive rush, because it is at a low pressure, but there is SO MUCH of it.
I suggest you find a mechanically competent friend/neighbor/relative/whoever to do this for the first time while you watch.

I have just the friend in mind. Thanks!

schrader valve on Wikipedia

This is a pretty good explanation and shows the stem core tool built into many valve caps. You can find one at any auto parts store and probably Wal*Mart too. I have one that has additional thread cleaners for the inside and outside threads and looks like a little 4-way wrench "+".

NAPA carries the ones that go on the valve stem, in steel and are about $.40 each (forty cents). A tool will cost a little more, but I like the valve stems with them built in because they are cheap and I try to keep one on every vehicle I have, so I can find one when I need it.

The valve repair went great! Thanks for your help. It was as easy as everyone suggested. I removed the valve, reinserted the new one as the air leaked out and only had to inflate it a few pounds. Tire never deflated enough for me to be concerned about bead coming of the rim.
