I have a Ford 1000. The lug size is odd- between 1" and 1 1/16" with the latter being too big (loose on a 6 point) I tried my Ingersoll impact gun at 150 psi with no luck. I also tried a pipe on my 1/2 ratchet but stopped short of breaking it. I will get a breaker bar and longer pipe, but what size are these lugs? Are they metric? My metrics stop at 19mm so I would need to know what size to get.

Take one of the nuts to a place they sell tools and match it up with a wrench.

I have Ford 1700. The lugs are metric. I'm not close to my tractor to actually double check but mine are 17mm for front and for the back is 22 mm. I'm not %100 sure on the rear tires though. I use a 4" (3/4") extension , a 3' breaker bar and appropriate size 3/4" metric socket. I bought a set of 3/4" impact socket (Chrome Vanadium) from Harbor Freight under $25 and it is great for the price. The set includes all the small ones up to 19mm plus 21,22,24,27,30 and 32 mm. That set is invaluable for any one owning a Japanese tractor. Before I start to wrestle with the stubborn Lug Nut I'll put a bit of penetrating oil on it or may be heat it a bit with a propane torch before I attempt longer cheater bar. Saying that I remember many years ago was trying to loosen a very stubborn lug nuts with the set up I mentioned above along with 5 foot cheater bar (pipe)... I literally was moving the car and no go, I ended up bending my breaker bar a bit and then I heard a big bang... it popped loose but It sure scard the bejesus out of me:eek:

Good luck

If he could get one of the nuts off, he wouldn't be asking what size it is!

1" is 25.4mm, 1-1/16" is 26.99 mm. If it' metric, it's 26mm.

My first thought when I read this is what IH3444 wrote. Buy the socket set. It will pay for itself quick.

I had to have some lug nuts removed one time. I broke 2 lug wrenches trying. An IR 1" impact wrench had trouble removing them. 1/2" stuff probably won't do it.

The set is definitely cheap enough, especially if the pieces are any good at all. You can spend that much for two sockets from a name brand. Gotta wonder about shipping costs on a 32 lb package. Check TSC and similar stores, too. The tools may be imported from lower Slobovia or somewhere, but if they look to of decent quality they're probably worth the price. I have some large combination wrenches from a Cummins truckload (maybe boatload would be a better term) tool sale and so far have only bent one of them.

At some risk of offending lots of people, myself included, have you tried the primitive method of using a pipe wrench of appropriate size? That's presuming you have room to grab the lug and turn the wrench, which may or may not be the case, depending on how your wheels are mounted. It could easily chew up the lug nut, but at least it would be off.

When I'm tackling big nuts and bolts speed is no longer a concern for me. My need is just to break something loose or tightening it tight enough when I'm done. I reckon just about every one has a 3/4" breaker bar, a set of 3/4" impact deep socket from Harbor Freight or Cummins is around $20. Once I got the lugs loose then I use my decent quality 1/2" ratchet with 1/2" to 3/4" adaptor and then I'm good go.

1/2" ratchet does just fine with big nuts and bolts if they are loose. For my need and probably most people having a 3/4" ratchet is not essential and can get around it easy.

Before I owned a tractor.. a normal wrench set and a 3/8 drive craftsman set got me by. When i started getting tractors.. say.. up into the 30hp range.. I had to move up to 1/2" tools. Got a decent overseas set ( a few years back.. isn't china.. but similar.. but is a good set.. no broken sockets.. has a breaker bar, socket wrench and 2 extensions.. has sizes up to 1 1/16" ). When i moved up to 48-95 hp machines.. the 1/2" set didn't cut it anymore. I went to china store and picke dup a beefy 3/4" set.. went up just past 2" Has been great.. sockets are thick wall.. breaker bar is like 1" round stock! And i have had a 4' pipe on them with me dangling and jumping on it..
