Properly maintained points system is VERY reliable. I've got quite a few tractors on points.. I've changed 3 sets of points in 5 years on 6 tractors... My tractors crank on the 1st or 2nd rev.

Sorry I took so long to post the remedy. Soundguy and Johan3400 get the Gold Wrench award.
1st, I checked fuel flow. Good flow out of tank, so just changed filter for good measure. (settling bowl is long gone).
After changing fuel filter, started the same, initial sputtering, then evened out. Still only ran for 10 - 15 minutes then began sputtering and died.
2nd, replaced points, condenser, plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and wires. (Parts house didn't have coil that would work.) Started even better, no sputtering at all, but still began sputtering and died 10-15 minutes later.
FINALLY, replaced coil. Started and ran flawlessly for over an hour.....
