Can't recycle hydraulic oil...what?

They probably didn't see hydraulic fluid specifically listed on their list of approved substances and are scared of contaminating a whole tank of recyclable fluid.

That makes a tank full of valuable used engine oil you can sell into hazardous waste you must pay big bucks to be rid of..

When I used to work as a mechanic, we had 2 waste streams for oil. One for engine oil, including crushed filters , and one for hyd oil and other similar fluids. Cross contaminating was a big no no.

I think that as long as the hyd tank had no engine oil they paid for that too. Theyd buy it as long as no engine oil was present. I think it comes into play when they recycle it. Maybe they cant distill out the various products and must dispose of it as waste if cross contaminated.

the idea that waste oil can be contaminated is mostly just a scare tactic.

Virtually ALL recycle systems for waste oil use centerfuge separation. This allows them to separate the oil by viscosity of the fluid. any mixed water, glycol (eg colant), ATF, diff/gear oil, hydraulic etc are separated via centrifuge. the weights of the diffrent fluids are known and the waste oil is fed through various speed centrifuges each extracting its own fluid.

after that its filtered and resold as various products.

Autozone and Advanced auto were my first places i would ever take old oil too when i was in High school

It will never be hazarous waste, they can always sell it to waste oil burners, even if there not legal in your state some one i would think would get it for free in a tank truck and then sell it out of state in a state that could burn it., And this is assuming that california really has waste oil burners as illegal.

Heck i have a bit of water in mine. If a pan gets rained in or it blows into my shed in my bucket, i cant help all that.
