They probably didn't see hydraulic fluid specifically listed on their list of approved substances and are scared of contaminating a whole tank of recyclable fluid.

That makes a tank full of valuable used engine oil you can sell into hazardous waste you must pay big bucks to be rid of..
When I used to work as a mechanic, we had 2 waste streams for oil. One for engine oil, including crushed filters , and one for hyd oil and other similar fluids. Cross contaminating was a big no no.
I think that as long as the hyd tank had no engine oil they paid for that too. Theyd buy it as long as no engine oil was present. I think it comes into play when they recycle it. Maybe they cant distill out the various products and must dispose of it as waste if cross contaminated.
