Can\'t shift out of FWD

Having a LOT of trouble with my TC40DA - shifting out of FWD back to 2 wheel. Have to crawl under the tractor and put a big crescent wrench over the lever on the trans and put quite a bit of weight against it to get it to shift out. Once it is done, shifts quite easily back and forth until I run it in FWD for a time. Then it is back to stuck again. Any suggestions? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Can\'t shift out of FWD

Doug, the next time that happens, roll the bucket forward, lower it to the ground, then use it to lift the front wheels off the ground a bit, and see if it doesn't shift out of 4WD easily. It sounds as if you're getting some windup in the driveline, and if so, taking the weight off the front wheels will relieve the pressure on the gears. Sometimes just backing up at the same time you try to shift will also work.

Your problem is common and we have all experienced similar difficulty until we learn how to shift with no problems. The problem is that the FWD and front wheels are under load. What I mean is that the geartrain is engaged and feeling some pressure. The easiest way to relieve this if you have a loader is put the bucket down and lift the front wheels slightly off the ground. You'll be able to easily shift out of or into FWD with the wheels in the air. Another way is (on level ground) to slightly rock the tractor backwards and forwards while gently moving the wheels left and right. That will relieve the geartrain loading and allow easy shifting.

If either of those methods doesn't work, you have some other severe problem. At no time should you have to crawl under your tractor with a wrench to get the shifting done. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Can\'t shift out of FWD

dliston, My old TC-18 was a bear to pull out of FWD. What I had to do is well covered by Bird and jinman...as always ! I am wondering though if it's a hydro thing because this TC-33 gear shift slides in and out as smooth as silk.

Re: Can\'t shift out of FWD

Are you running 4wd in "high traction" situations? I've found than mine "loads up" if I forget to shif out of 4wd and then travel on my driveway.

Also seems happier to shift back to 2wd after driving straight for a while vs mid turn.

If these or the other suggestions don't do it, as Jinman said you may have deeper problems.

Re: Can\'t shift out of FWD

Eveyone above hit the nail right on the head. The reason one tractor has a problem and the other does not could and probably is due to different load ing of the tractor ie: one has a loader and the other does not. Mechanically the front and rear hubs turn the same speed, but throw tires on and things change. Loading of the tractor, tire pressure, wieght in the bucket or not, (you get the picture) changes the rolling circumference of the tires and gets the gearing out of whack and causes driveline wrap-up, which is a pressure or twisting load on the driveshaft which causes the gears to not want to disengage.

Re: Can\'t shift out of FWD

TechinNY; At last a NH mechanic, I mean, Technician. I have a problem similar to being stuck in 4times4. I've got the 12times12 SSS. No problem with the shuttle, but shifting the trans and changing speed ranges is not easy. Even after making hay with Daryl, I've only got 41 hours on it. Could it be because it's still new or what? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Really not intending to hijack, just felt this was a good thread to throw this in also. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh yeah, it's a TC35.

Re: Can\'t shift out of FWD

tc30 with hst - not being in a turn seems the most important thing in my experience. to come from 4wd to 2wd i get straight ahead on level ground. if the shift lever does not move smoothly, i creep forward while turning the steering wheel a bit and keeping gentle pressure on the shift lever till it drops in place.

jacking up on the FEL seems like a good idea to try sometime.

Re: Can\'t shift out of FWD

I know the gear shift has always been stiff on the TC tractors but as far as the range I thought they were pretty decent. I would have your dealer check it out to be sure. Who's Daryl?

Re: Can\'t shift out of FWD

techinNY; Daryl is 5030, checkout the thread in projects,"Making hay with Johnday",

Thanks about the range shifter, I went out and sprayed everything with PB Blaster and freed it up quite abit, still not real happy with the trans shifter though. At the 50 hour service I'll bring the complaints to my dealer. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
