I have been racking my brain and need help. I want to place a cap of some type over the top of my wood fence posts to keep them from rotting. The caps need to be able to slip over a wood post which is about 5" wide across the top and only be about 1" - 2" tall. I would like to be able to nail through the side of the cap to keep it on the top of the post. Help?????

Cans work fine, even plastic ones. You can also cut thin sheet metal to size, snip a couple of places so it will fold over the edge and nail it with roofing nails.

Aluminum flashing cut to a disk and formed over the top and a couple of aluminum nails on the sides to hold it there.

I would get some PVC siding and just cut to fit with snips. It should last longer than something that is not UV protected.

if the tops are angled off and sealed with paraffin or other water proofing they will last a long time...all the above suggestions are good...some involve more labor than others...

No one has asked if your want them to look nice as well as function. :)

Is this a work fence or something you want to show off? ;)

I have seen some solar powered caps to go on top (those where 4x4''s though), I used a piece of 1x6 decking cut down and 1/2 round routed on the sides and then just screwed down on my 4x4's, i have also on my 4x6's, that my gates are attached to, built some birdhouses and put them on top. Lots of ways to make them look cool.

I used a lot of these on my horse fence 4x4 posts some 20 years ago. I have NEVER had to replace a post.
I think Home Depot sells them and they do come in other sizes. They have a small hole in the top for a nail, I used the roofing nails with the neoprene washers. A $1 something each.

Thanks for the thoughts so far. Yes, its a "work fence" and doesn't have to be pretty, just functional.
