Thanks for the thoughts so far. Yes, its a "work fence" and doesn't have to be pretty, just functional.

Then just use some liquid nails caulking and glue a piece of 1X6 on top. Cheap and effective. ;)

I have been racking my brain and need help. I want to place a cap of some type over the top of my wood fence posts to keep them from rotting. The caps need to be able to slip over a wood post which is about 5" wide across the top and only be about 1" - 2" tall. I would like to be able to nail through the side of the cap to keep it on the top of the post. Help?????

We have used roof tar or Henry tar sealant. It is like the tree sealant used after pruning. It hardens enough to prevent rain penatration but you can still nail through it. You have to have a dark fence color as the tops would be black.

Sounds like unneccessary addition to me. The bottom of the post will rot off before there is any appreciable detioration in the tops, especially if it is angle cut. I have seen old, tumble down fences with perfectly solid tops on the posts.
