I don't remember that one. I do remember, though, occasionally thinking a VW would be a good idea for me. And all I had to go was go visit a dealer, drive one around the block, and that would cure me of even THINKING I might want one for a couple of years.

I spent many irresponsible hours in a VW van.

I think I've mentioned before that we had at least 4, maybe 5 of them. The last one in particular had lots of problems and was in the shop all the time. Dad finally got some satisfaction from VW of America when they forced the local dealer to rebuild the engine for the price of a couple fan belts. Seems it had some experimental motor in it with dual carbs. The pistons were installed incorrectly and some other things were screwy on it too. For a VW, it was fast. It could jump the front tires over a beer can for $20.00.

I just heard it mentioned in a feature about Lampoon on NPR a few days ago...apparently they got sued by Volkswagen.

They were the original Big Box on Wheels, But smaller.

I remember in later years reading an article about a small shop doing conversions - dropping the Rabbit fwd drive-train into the rear of the vans. Not a difficult swap for a competent garage, and people liked the results.

I enjoy the sound of the old air-cooled Vdubs (a good part of that is admittedly nostalgia), but many lawn tractors today probably run higher hp than those old motors.

HEY! I had a '63 VW Beetle, it had a 40HP engine! A lot more than the old 36HP :)
