When my wife and I visited San Diego just after we married 9 years ago we shopped around for a used all wheel drive vehicle to replace our aging and rusting Pathfinder. Went to a Mercury dealer in Mission Valley. Took one car out for a test drive while they took the keys to the Pathfinder to check out its value in trade.
We quickly realized we didn't like their car, so returned and asked for our keys back. No way! Hard sell tactics and keys nowhere to be found. After 45 minutes of escalating from polite requests to outright demands to be given our keys back -- all to no avail -- I leaned over and dialed 911, telling the dispatcher we were being held against our will!
The police arrived in less than a minute, and to my surprise the sargeant had some heated words with the manager about this being the THIRD call that month from irate customers being detained, and if it didn't stop, etc.
I no longer surrender my keys to anyone!
