Car or truck tires on a trailer

Hopefully, the wheels match your 8 ply Load range "D" tires.

I don't know about that as I haven't had the wheels checked. But, I have had the poor trailer's leaf springs bottomed out & didn't have any wheel problems. only had tire side wall roll when turning.

so for me Bias Ply trailer tires all the way

In 1991, when radial trailer tires were relatively new, one of my brothers in the tire business agreed with you, but he changed his mind within in a couple of years. I know some people still buy bias ply tires because they are "cheaper", but only in initial cost. The radials are actually cheaper in the long run because they last so much longer. And I'm sure there must be some others who agree with you on the other reasons, but I'll have to admit I've never heard of anyone who would agree in the last 15 years.

to each their own. it is just my opinion and well it can be taken for just that. doesnt affect my paycheck :D Knock on wood i have never had a blow out or tread seperation with Bias Ply tires. Picked up a camper with ST radial and had the tread come apart on 2 of the 4 in a matter of a couple of months. one Goodyear and one Nanking

Here is the marathon

the nanking developed a shimmy that i could feel fromt he truck. pulled over to check it out and found a lump about the size of a softball in the tread. Put some carlisle bias ply's ont here and havent had a problem since. Here is what i went to on my triple axle gooseneck. from E's to G's still doesnt match the 21K rating for the axles. triple 7 k Dester axles with UMH hubs 12x2 electric brakes on all 3, 3,500# monoleaf springs.

and yes the wheels are rated for the load as well

It's not that I don't believe you, because I'm sure you're right about your own experience. It was just such a surprise because it's contrary to everyone else's experience that I'm familiar with. Of course I'm old enough to have blown lots of bias ply tires; both on trailers and on cars.:D I've seen "bubbles" on a number of radial tires, but even more on bias ply. And once, near Pendleton, OR, I had all the tread all the way around sling off a bias ply trailer tire on my little 5' x 10' tiltbed trailer with no load except 3 sheets of plywood.

Bird it is my experience that people suffer so many trailer tire faliures simply becuse they mistreat them so bad. They treat trailer tires in ways that they would never treat their car or truck tire. Specially in the areas of inflation " oh its ok we will put air in when we get to town" and they have tires that are 8 or 10 years old and can't seem to understand why they fail when they load them to the max 15lb short on pressure.

Yep, I agree.:D

I use light truck tires on my trailer, since the wheels are from another CJ7 - the idea is to share the spare.

For 4 years I used old tires I got cheap, but recently one of them developed leaking crack in the sidewall and I replaced them both. I use the trailer for quite heavy loads, and I dont ever want to blow a tire on the trailer.

I am also with you on this. I have a very good friend who works for a tire distributor and says the exact same thing. So not much has changed. I am younger than most but have had recent experiences with such. I have 4 trailers 1 32' RV (the lightest at 6500lbs) and 3 over 10,000. My RV had bias ply tires and were looking environmentally challenged. Guess what... yep lost all the tread and took off my valves for black water with it. Put my spare on and got home. The next day called my friend and got 5 new tires.

Since then I will always use the proper tire for the application. I also want to have a spare no matter what. I would not want to leave anything on the side of the road and come back to find out some one has taken or messed with things. Tractors are not cheep nor is much else these days.;)
